John Travolta in serious talks to play Gotti, says exec producer -- EXCLUSIVE

travolta-gottiImage Credit: Tina Gill/PR Photos; Ron Galella/WireImage.comWho’s the Boss? Chances are, it’s John Travolta. According to Marc Fiore — the CEO of Fiore Films, LLC — the Pulp Fiction star is in serious talks to play New York City mob boss John Gotti in Gotti, an upcoming film executive produced by Fiore about three generations of the crime family. (A source in Travolta’s camp says it’s one of four projects he’s considering at this time.) “We would love to have him,” Fiore tells EW. “He’s a terrific actor. John Gotti, Sr. — he’s an icon. And so is Travolta … The Gottis have an image already. People know who they are. You can’t just be a good actor, you have to be a great actor who can become John Gotti.”

As for who will direct the film about “the Teflon Don,” Fiore is finalizing a deal with Travolta’s Face/Off co-star — and The Notebook director — Nick Cassavetes. And another big name is being tossed around to play John Jr.: James Franco. Fiore says he is in very preliminary talks with Franco, but that he’s one of several “A-list actors” they are speaking to. (A rep for Franco, who already has a busy schedule ahead of him, confirms the preliminary status: “A script was sent to him. That’s all. There are no plans for him to do it at this time.”) Regardless of who jumps on board, Fiore says to expect a film that will recall another famous mobster tale. “It’s going to be the new Godfather,” Fiore says. “It’s a story about a father and a son, but the father happens to be John Gotti Sr.”

It certainly doesn’t hurt that the cast and crew will have help from a valuable source: The Gotti family. Fiore says the entire family has signed exclusives to be consultants on the film — which Fiore hopes to begin filming in summer 2011 — including John Gotti Jr., who worked on the script with writer Leo Rossi (who appeared in Analyze This) “every day.” “We have a real inside look,” says Fiore. “John, Jr. will answer any question you ask him. The Gotti family, they don’t try to put a sweater over things.”

I seem to remember reading that Angelina Jolie was another who would maybe have a role in this?

    • Ken

MarcO Fiore is just a low-level thug who worked in one of Gotti’s boiler rooms back in the 1990s, while passing along illegal stock tips to his roommate, John Melendez.

      Do the research, people.

      • Name

He also passed on illegal stock tips to other people too. :/

  • MJ

He will never be as good as Armand Assante was as Gotti in the HBO movie.

    • Nikki

I was just coming down here to say that they already had the best actor for Gotti when they already did “Gotti” on HBO. Armand Asanti was so brilliant, that I bought the movie. Of course, it’s on VHS and I need to upgrade, lol, but I digress.
I don’t think they even need to re-do this, just re-release the original Gotti, or re-hire Armand. FAIL.

      • Nikki

I have no clue how I misspelled his last name like that. oy!

    • ks

      Totally agree!

      • ABC

I totally agree too. Assante even looks like Gotti. Travolta dosent. Still, the original didn’t do Sammy “the bull” Gravvano justice.

      • frankie

what justice do you think a rat like sammy should get? 1)he sold out johnny to save his own ass 2)what about all the murders he had part in. 3)what about all the familys of all the people he killed. what kind of justice did they get. sammy admitted to 20 murders and he got a slap on the wrist. johny who was convicted and found guilty of murder not one person who ever took the satnd couldf ever say john ever actualy killed anyone it was all hear say sammyu told me john said this sammy said johnny told you to have me do this. not once did anyone ever hear john say do it. so what justice does he deserve?

  • Greg

I think it’s great casting. John Travolta would make a great John Gotti.

  • Chris

Doesn’t a mob boss’s family signing exclusives to be consultants on a movie kind of ruin the whole ‘omerta’ code? I mean not that there is anyone left to enforce it after last week’s arrests.

    • Vince from NYC

Gotti Sr. never followed the code.. Worst boss ever.. That’s why he died in jail.

      • CindyR

Vince…may his soul rest. My own personal opinion of the decline of the U.S. Mafia has led to a decline in living standards. I’m just a simple southern gal but the mafia had a way of keeping wealthy politicians in the mindset “for the people”. Nowadays? It’s all about greedy CEO’s.

      • CindyR

Furthermore..I would love to see a resurrection of the Mafia. From what we all know, they were affiliated with Unions which led to better working conditions for hourly workers who Corporate Executives now see as slave labor that can be bought for 2 cents an hour in China!!!

  • scman

John Gotti played by a gay Scientologist?

  • Maria

Since Scientology and the Mafia have so much in common… why not?

  • samuel

I believe the gay scientologist is Tom Cruise not John Travolta

    • Bill Clay

      It’s both.

  • CindyR

Oh yeah!!! A Travolta casting as Gotti is a role he was MADE for!!! I wouldn’t be surprised if an Oscar came from it.

  • Tough Guy

Who will play “Adopted Son” Lewis Kasman? He should make a movie and do a book…. Has the GOTTTI secrets!!

  • ITguy

John Travolta sucks, he hasn’t made a decent movie in years

  • mojo

I would not pay 10 cents to see this movie….the HBO version was great and Travolta will not stand up against that role.

  • Clete

Kind of curious what the other three projects are.

  • to Nikki and samuel

Nikki – Armand Assanti was the perfect Gotti, but studio execs think Travolta will bring a crowd, which is a surprise to me because Travolta is a horrible actor, hard to look at, and just not convincing; to samuel John Travolta and Tom Cruise are both scientologists and are both gay, I have no problem with people being gay, I do have a problem with people being gay pretending not to be, it is insulting to other gays and not supportive

    the gov.t worse than them

the gov.t is legal organized crime they dont like competion
