Ricky Gervais’ claim that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had already asked him to consider hosting next year’s Golden Globes was met with a swift denial from Phil Berk, president of the HFPA: “There is no truth to this rumor. We have not asked him to come back. Nice try, Ricky.” UPDATE (3:09 p.m. ET) A spokesperson for Gervais emailed the following statement: “Ricky is horrified that people think that he had said the HFPA had requested him back. He never said this. He said that the show’s organisers, in this case — NBC, called him and said he should not rule out a return for a third time. Ricky at no point mentioned this was the HFPA and called Philip Berk earlier today to explain this to him.”

The HFPA should be so lucky to get Ricky back next year… its not likely
“nice try ricky”? what are they, 8? that was hilariously catty.
Don’t worry next year they’ll probably get someone toothless and asinine like Jimmy Phallus to host and no one will be offended, most likely due to the fact that no one will be watching.
Am I the ONLY ONE who thinks Ricky was not out of line @ all? It was all in fun. Come on now. These Hollywood types take themselves too too too seriously. This is a non-issue, people! I’ve heard commics say harsher things.
Why do people consider Ricky funny? I’ve really only seen him do these award shows and they’ve been amusing, (at most) and desperate most often. Where does all this love come from?
So you haven’t seen The Office, Extras, his movies, his stand up specials or listened to his radio show or podcast and you can’t see why people find him funny?
What goose said.
I haven’t but should it matter? If he’s hired to be funny on an awards show, shouldn’t that be a proper showcase?
Why do people consider him funny? Because unlike you, we HAVE seen him in other vehicles. If you choose not to that’s your affair, but if you choose to limit yourself to his awards show appearances, then it’s no surprise you don’t understand his appeal.
You got to be joking! Have you never seen Extras? or his stand up?
they’re just too self-absorbed, fact.
No, Lincoln, you’re not the only one.
While watching the show, I was initially a bit shocked at some of his jokes. However, you have to admit he had everyone talking and it certainly wasn’t boring.
It’s the Globes’ loss.
And ours.
The HFPA President has the scariest looking hair I’ve ever seen.
I thought the same thing. It looks like it was modeled after a toilet bowl seat.
I love how Karl’s crazy fantasies alywas start with a grain of truth. I remember watching a programme a few years ago on Animal Planet or NatGeo where the US navy were actually training dolphins to be suicide bombers. The dolphins had a large red button on their nose and when they pressed the button against the submarine they got a reward..but in real life the button would be a detonator blowing up the dolphin and the sub. The US Navy say that have since abandoned the programme
Ricky’s way too good for them anyway. I mean, who even cares about the Golden Globes? They gave best comedy to Glee, for god’s sake.
I hope they hire some ‘safe’ guy to do it next year and their ratings plummet.
They could get James Franco and Anne Hathaway.
Burn!
oh, suh-nap, son!
Agreed. How can you give much validity to a show that nominates Alice in Wonderland, RED, AND the Tourist for Best Picture? The ONLY good part about the show was Gervais. Otherwise, it’s a total snoozefest.
They should hope they get him back.
“Nice try, Ricky?”
The HFPA President is an idiot. He is in this business. He should understand that things get taken out of context all the time.
Fo rills. What an uptight turd.
Ricky is the only reason to watch. The HFPA President should be so lucky to get him back.
He was the only reason I even watched…fully entertaining and looks to me like the old cronies just don’t like to be made to look like asses.
Can you imagine the ratings for next year’s telecast if he was to return as host? After all of the publicity this year, everyone would tune in next year just to hear what he would say.
He was the best part about the Globes by far. It’s disgusting the way the HFPA is treating him.
Sucks for the Globes… guess we’re back to no hosts again I suppose.
I read instapundit glrieiously and occassionly follow links for drhelen, yet nothing but nothing would compel me to listen to a podcast. Why would I download and listen for ten minutes to hear information that I can scan in 30 seconds, and, even better, search and easily link to and quote? In Gervais’ case, I admit there’s probably something in his delivery that would be lost in transcripts. But book discussions? People who write are probably best able to ummm…yknow…express themselves in text.
This is the first comment thread I’ve ever read where everyone is in agreement (with the small exception of HD). Fantastic. Ricky rules.
S&C: Subbed 70# DB, no KB.Completed 5 DB Swings of the 5th round when clock hit 10:00. Fouled, did burpees then efsinhid @ 11:26. Very displeased with foul, just couldn’t keep a hold on the DB. The grip demand on the 70# DB width vs. 55# DB makes a difference even more than the weight.
