The new trailer for Marvel Studios’ Thor (out May 6) starts not with booming explosions, but some laughs. It seems Thor (Star Trek‘s Chris Hemsworth) is swinging his hammer toward our funny bone.
This involves the god-hero getting tazed, Natalie Portman raising her eyebrows doubtfully as she tells the hospital his “name,” and Kat Dennings Facebooking the Marvel character’s voracious appetite for PopTarts.
Then things get heavy. Check it out below:
As you can see, the new trailer also giving us the first sustained look at the trio of villains he will face on his humbling mission to protect Earth (thanks for turning on the charm, Natalie Portman). First: Thor’s brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston, whom we’ll see more of in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse), a bitter sibling out to undercut Thor and usurp their father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). “A brother who is unhappy is a dangerous relative to have,” director Kenneth Branagh tells EW. (Yes, that Kenneth Branagh.)
Villain No. 2 is a bit frostier. “The story involves a clash with an ice planet,” says Branagh, “and the frost giants who live therein. They — as might be suggested by the name — are enormous creatures of incredible power who have been robbed of their power and glory by Odin, Thor’s father. What fuels a lot of this intense battle is revenge. This is an angry race, trying to get back at Thor and the Asgardians, the self-proclaimed guardians of the universe.”
The final villain is “an incredible war machine known as The Destroyer,” Branagh says. That’s the massive, metal giant whose face opens up to reveal projectile hellfire. “This series of metal bands form a giant, walking beast and open to reveal terrifying firepower,” he says, and the ruler of Asgard controls it. (Although maybe it responds to “Klaatu Barada Nikto“?)
“In the right hands, this incredibly powerful device — awesome in its killing quality — is potentially a creature of extraordinary protective powers,” says the director. “In the wrong hands, it is a nightmare.”
Check back on EW.com tomorrow morning for more from Branagh on how he went about humanizing the taciturn Norse god.

This looks like it is going to give Flash Gordon a run for awesome awfulness!
Good lord, Thor is friggin’ hot. I wanna suck on his hammer.
love his hammer!
Take a number. I’m first.
Is that Robocop 2 vs. Thor toward the end?
Considering Branagh was one of the worst villains in movie history in Wild Wild West, i’ve decided not to listen to him on this subject.
Branagh wasn’t in Wild Wild West!
Oops, I’m Wrong (as always), only seen the movie once, never did realize it was him.
Finally, a man that looks as if he doesn’t follow Justin Bieber on twitter is an action hero.
Hrm…well Thor can’t act but at least he is nice to look at!
Can’t comment on his acting (though I did love him in Star Trek…that beginning always makes me cry) – but seriously, that man is GORGEOUS. And his voice is delicious. Completely, completely sexy.
Who is he in S.T.?
Kirk’s doomed daddy
why is the video already removed?
I don’t know about Portman or Dennings, but seeing a Celestial styled the way Jack Kirby drew them is frikkin’ awesome…
Actually, the metal-man is The Destroyer, but, yes, he’s very much in the original King Kirby style.
Natalie looks like she is gonna be awful in this movie. Stop playing the damsel in distress already; it does not suit you.
Note: By “damsel in distress” I mean the hero’s romantic interest, like in Star Wars. I am not referring to her turn as the Black Swan.
Her astonishing performance in Black Swan has put her in a new league and it’s a shame to see her returning to the more run-of-the-mill stuff where she always looks lost and bored.
Thor/Liam hemsworth looks like sabertooth from x-men.
His name is Chris not Liam =S….
After all the ominous music and the “you don’t know what you’ve unleashed”, the big bad monster looks quite anticlimactic. He looks as scary and menacing as a popsicle.
I actually think this movie could totally rock. Wasn’t expecting much initially, but the trailers have me pretty psyched.
I concur.
I think it’s trying to move ahead of “Ghost Rider” as the worst comic-book adaptation in history. The only impressive thing in that trailer is Thor’s pecs.
Uhm… Daredevil has that distinction already.
I’ll watch Cage’s Ghost Rider over THAT any day
Actually, wasn’t “Howard the Duck” the worst comicbook adaptation in history, or was that only for the 20th century?
Cool cant wait
Trailer was f*cking awesome.
Shut up ! Shut up !! Shut Up!!!!!!!! For all of you negative commenting fanboys. What would make you winers happy. They are making a Thor movie, shut the hell up and be happy.
Sorry chief. But this looks terrible. Q:What would make me happy? A:Making comic book movies that are actually good.
Stop judging the quality of a movie before you see it. The quality of a movie cannot be decided by the trailer.
Thor was my favorite hero back in the 60s & 70s. I’m so glad that he has been rediscovered! From what I see in the trailer, this looks great and true to the feel of the old comics. I am GOING to see this movie!!!
That was awesome
I gotta say I don’t usually go for superhero movies, but this one is directed by Kenneth Branagh so I’m really excited. C’mon, he did something really cool with “Henry V” back in the day. I looks fun. “Bring me another!” Hilarious.
If Kenneth Branagh directed it then I’m going to see it. Although in this latest trailer I could’ve sworn that the Kraken morphed into some land creature!
