Film Independent Spirit Awards: Host Joel McHale reacts inappropriately to 'Black Swan,' '127 Hours,' and 'Winter's Bone' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Joel-McHaleImage Credit: Kyle Christy/IFCIt is fair to say Joel McHale was chosen to host this year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards more for his comedy chops than his indie movie cred (although he was actually pretty good in Steven Soderbergh’s admittedly major studio-financed The Informant!). The Community star makes the most of that fact in the exclusive promo clip below, which finds him reluctantly watching a selection of nominated movies and reacting with amusing inappropriateness to the likes of 127 Hours, The Kids Are All Right, and Greenberg (“Oh, Greg Focker, will you ever get it right?”).

Check out the video and tell us what you think. Are you looking forward to the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which IFC will broadcast on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 10 p.m.? Who would you like to see win?

    Inappropriate? NO! Funny? Hell yes!

  • Hey Now

    Wow, he sucks

    • Joanna

I agree. He is alright in COMMUNITY, but here he is just not even trying.

    • Rachel

? he’s really funny. “best episode of that 70’s show ever!!!”

      • Gombloh

Hey Joel I didn’t know it was bring your kids to the pool day! (I know we are dorks) but how funny that was sort of a picture of tihgns to come! And yes you and your sister make some pretty cute little kiddos!

  • Erik

It would’ve been funny if he had been committed to the acting part of the scene. I just wish comedians today got rid of this whole SNL-ish kind of acting…where you can see they are just trying to mug and “be funny”, but there’s no actual acting involved.

What the heck happened to comics who could actually act?

  • Sid Dithers

    1. he’s excellent in the excellent Community.
    2. he’s riffing on how someone like letterman would have done the promo.

    • deedee

      wow sid that’s a reach

I agree. The generation of “comedians” we have, since the nineties on, thinks that being snarky and making faces equals being funny. And none of them have taken a single acting class. It’s all about playing the same “character” over and over. Sad that those are the people that get the juicy roles in sitcomes.

Falling Skies is a big letdown. I echatwd 3 episodes back to back, and I am not going to watch it anymore. Shallow characters, recycled story and it proves once again that networks don’t know how to handle science fiction. They feel that they need such show, but they have no idea what to make and what is good science fiction. And Spielberg is not a filmmaker anymore, he is slapping his name to all kinds of garbage on TV or in the movies (Transformers 3, why Steve, why???). Lets hope that new Battlestar Galactica pilot does well, but based on the conceptual art I have seen, I don’t have any expectations for that one either. SyFy channel has gone of the rails with their shows making all these light sci-fi/comedy shows that you can watch, but don’t care much about. With exception of Haven, SyFy is done. Good thing I have DVD’s and Blu-Ray’s of my favorite shows to watch over and over again. I feel that time has come to watch Farscape again. Just a suggestion Dennis, it would be interesting to see a longer (or in parts) Tube Talk or other podcast about what is going on with Sci-Fi and fantasy on TV today, because I think that things are looking bad for the fans. Hopefully Fringe and Game Of Thrones will help bring back the quality to the genre.

I wish IFC and the Film Independent Awards would explain why for the first time in at least a decade the show will not be live. Instead, the show will air five hours later. No doubt it will all be spoiled by then. BOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sue Sylvester

Scariest part of it all was the institutional looking dvd boxes on his coffee table. I mean, their just white dvd boxes–like he dug ‘em out of the garbage in back of an abandoned Blockbuster Video store. Say, what’s the return policy on those free screeners pal? Do you get to keep them to enjoy with friends and family, or can you just drop them in the mail and have the academy send you next years nominees?

  • Lunna

O_o This is not a kids movie! LOL!
