Catherine Hardwicke on casting 'Red Riding Hood'... through make-out sessions -- EXCLUSIVE

red-riding-hoodImage Credit: Kimberly FrenchRed Riding Hood director Catherine Hardwicke has certainly proven she knows how to cast a movie. (Would Twilight have been the same if she hadn’t nabbed Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson?) Now, in an EW interview, the director unveils some of her casting secrets. “Starting with Thirteen, my known technique is to cast the lead, then find someone with whom they have incredible chemistry,” Hardwicke tells EW. “Like Nikki Reed and Evan Rachel Wood. Same with Rob and Kristen. The same was true with [Red Riding Hood star] Amanda [Seyfried]. I wanted her to be on fire with the person.”

So, for Seyfried’s romantic interest in Red Riding Hood, Hardwicke called in what she labels the “80 hottest guys from around the world” — and narrowed them down to eight. She then instructed Seyfried (“Quite the trooper!”) to make out with each of them. “I’d say, ‘You don’t have to kiss them all if you don’t want to,’ and then I’d look over there and think whoa!,” she says, laughing.

Seyfried and eventual co-star Shiloh Fernandez (who plays a woodcutter who Seyfried’s character romances in the movie) had winning chemistry from the start — even though, Hardwicke says, Seyfried had her doubts. “She had met Shiloh once at a dinner party and did not like him,” the director says. But Hardwicke had pressed the actress to remain open-minded — after all, Fernandez counted the director as a fan. In fact, she had even considered him the second choice to play Edward Cullen in Twilight. “There’s something interesting about Shiloh,” Hardwicke says. “Other guys I’ve directed in love scenes, I have to direct them, you know? Like, do that. Move your arm here. You don’t have to do that with Shiloh — he already has a PhD in just being sexy. He knows how to seduce. He’s got it going on. I was like, ‘Wow, okay. Roll camera!'”

Hardwicke always strikes me as equal parts creepy and crazy.

She’s a tween stuck in a 55 year old body.

“Would Twilight have been the same if she hadn’t nabbed Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson?”
Very true. It wouldn’t have been the same. It would have been better with better actors.

you’re wrong….. Pattinson made that Movie famous…your OLD comment of Rob and Kristen being no good actors have no more substance. Look at the Story of Twilight…A Dead Person ….stone old as a Vampire and a 16 year old girl with no personality except that she thinks ..Edward is SOOO BEAUTIFUL..thats it…so Sir whatever your dislike is explain how they could have done better. Its sad that you make a statement without explaining why .And who do you think would play it better..names, please. The Books where entertaining ,the Script just hideous

Apparently it wouldn’t have been better because RRH is getting worse reviews than Twilight. And Fernandez is coming across as a poor man’s Robert Pattinson, there must be a reason why he was not cast in Twilight.

This movie is sure to be terrible, just about as terrible as Twilight. The thing is, a horror version of Little Red Riding Hood could actually be really cool. But they had to go and make it appealing to the Twilight crowd, rendering it garbage.

Ha! this woman…does nto have a cap on her mouth at all!!

    I agree with Dave ^^

Twilight would have been tonnes better if she had chosen people who could act.

There are a number of young actors out there who would more than be able to blow Rob and kristen out of the water…

And also Taylor Lautner…the kid is cute, hot and can do a backflip without qualm….that does not mean he can act…

give me some names ,MORONS. If these two are so awful how come they get so many offers…I mean awesome WfE ,Cosmopolis, Snow White..

      • A

They get offers because braindead morons (i.e. you) like them, so directors and studios want them in their movies because you will go see them. Do you really think that there aren’t young actors and actresses better than these two?

Those aren’t awesome offers at all. They’re pretty lame offers. Those movies all sound terrible, and given Pattinson and Stewart’s track record so far, I wouldn’t hold your breath.
