It’s official: Paul Giamatti rocks. EW has confirmed that Giamatti is joining the cast of Rock of Ages, a big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical built around classic hair-band rock songs of the 1980s from groups like Bon Jovi, Journey, Poison, and Whitesnake. As first reported by Deadline, Giamatti will play the manager of a metal band fronted by Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). The cast also includes Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, and Alec Baldwin. Rock of Ages is slated to begin shooting in May with director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) at the helm, and is scheduled for release on June 1, 2012.

I’m not familiar with this musical, so I don’t know if he’ll get to sing, but I hope so…thought he displayed a pretty good voice in “Duets.”

I loathe musicals but they’re getting an intriguing cast together for this.

The manager of Arsenal? So they CREATED a new character just for this movie? This is all going downhill fast. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Paul Giamatti fan!) I want a movie version of the musical…not a crappy vehicle for Crazy Cruise. The play is about Drew and Sherrie and the Bourban Room, NOT about Stacee and some floozy reporter. This is just killing me.

    This sounds SO HORRIBLE!

Couldn’t agree more ViciousCircle. The broadway version is great because of Drew and Sherrie. Stacie is such a minor character. Im disturbed that they are casting new characters but seem to have forgotten all about Drew. I’m so worried that this is going to be a trainwreck and people won’t give the broadway show a chance, which is fun, sexy and totally rocking.

I loved the play Rock of Ages, and I can’t wait until the movie comes out.
