'Three Stooges' has its Curly: Will Sasso cast in knucklehead update -- EXCLUSIVE

Will Sasso, start practicing that angry bark. And your shuffling.

The MadTV funnyman, long rumored to be up for a major role in the Farrelly brothers’ upcoming Three Stooges movie, has been locked in as the new Curly, according to a source close to the production.

While it seems obvious that the heavyset, peach fuzz-headed actor would play the heavyset, peach fuzz-headed Stooge, some speculation had pegged him as the movie’s angry, bowl-cutted brother Moe. But Sasso, whose impressions of big, tough guys runs the gamut from Steven Seagal to Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Gandolfini, will be playing the kunckleheaded trio’s great big abuse magnet after all.

Peter and Bobby Farrelly are aiming at a mid-April start date for their 20th Century Fox film, which would be a fictional story using the Moe, Larry, and Curly characters in a modern setting, not a biopic of the actors who originated those parts, brothers Moe and Jerry “Curly” Howard and Larry Fine.

The other two lead roles have not yet been cast.

In its original form, Sean Penn was interested in playing a role, but bowed out to focus on his relief work in earthquake-ravaged Haiti, and Jim Carrey, who was gaining weight to play Curly, also dropped out, leading to a whole new round of auditions and casting by the There’s Something About Mary filmmakers.

I thought Penn bowed out to try and save his marriage at the time. This went from a great cast to a cast of one nobody. The fat guy who was on that episode of Entourage trying to hook up with Lloyd.

Will Sasso was hilarious over many seasons on MAD TV — he is funny and fearless, hope this is a big break for him.

~~Sheen does look like the mad one! and the guy from Shine could be the goofy red hair one. But will sasso! come on people he is great!

      • LeeAnne

Will Sasso is great at what he does. But he’s not Three Stooges material.

      • Peter

What type of law do you practice?

  • Lynn B

I agree with John, who cares about this guy? This movie is just gonna suck now. They need Charlie Sheen to play Moe if they wanna make there money back.

Sheen does look like the mad one! and the guy from Shine could be the goofy red hair one. But will sasso! come on people he is great!

You and John C must not know who Sasso is; this is pitch-perfect casting.

And kudos to the person who suggested Paul Giamatti as Larry, but why not go with comics? Todd Barry would kill as Larry and Nick DiPaolo *is* Moe incarnate.

    • Cris

This movie is gonna suck NOW? This movie was ALWAYS going to suck. THIS is inspired casting, though

      • LeeAnne

Inspired casting? A giant 6’3″ Stooge? That’s about the opposite of inspired.

    • Nick

It’s like they have run out of good ideas.

      • g littell

they must not have any good writers any more all we get are remakes of movies and tv shows

  • J. Taylor

Will sasso to us Madtv fans is the shiznizle!. cant wait to see him knock it out of the park!.

  • Walrus

This has “bad idea” written all over it. It’s like making a new Abbott and Costello or Laurel and Hardy film and announcing that you have recast the parts.
With that said, how about Paul Giamatti or Billy West as Larry?

    • Meier

Five points for the Billy West suggestion! Stimpson J. Cat WAS Larry Fine.

    • Dave

Billy West – end of story!

  • topoopon

The originals pefected that act over decades. The chemistry will not work. It’s just not the same.

  • HawdCoor

    Sasso is perfect

  • Steve Gennarelli

I’d cast veteran character actor Seymour Cassell to play Shemp, after, of course, dying his hair jet black.

  • Jeremy

Michael Chiklis was great as Curly in the Bio film.

  • RMS

    Sasso is a perfect fit.

  • Nerwen Aldarion

Hmmm he’s got the look down but that is just window dressing, what really counts is if he can actually act like Curly.

  • SBubba

Will Sasso is a great and much umderrated talent. It will be good to see him in anything.

  • alan

I would like to see play the part of curly howard is mark addy as curly or frank caliendo as curly or kevin p. farley as curly or will sasso as curly they look like curly howard please please

  • RMH

Terrible casting. Sasso is incredibly unfunny.

    • Meier

And a former pro-wrestler. *”Price is Right” lose noise*

  • yepyep

to me one of the things that made them even funnier is that they were short compaired to the people they are casting, maybe its me. They were little guys with taller people around them all the time.

    • LeeAnne

You’re exactly right – the Stooges shouldn’t be any taller than 5’9″ or you take away a whole aspect of the visual and physical comedy right there.

  • Jughead

Ach, nuts to this. How’s about Wilford Brimley as Curly? He could walk around with a bowl of oatmeal and marbles in his mouth.

    • LLPR

Peach Buzz or Fuzz Curly is cast now what other knuckleheads are joining 3stooges Grace Baine the green heroine mother nature in peril who was green when being passed up in Hallpass?
