Just how similar is the upcoming An Invisible Sign to the 2005 film Proof? Let’s count the ways. Both revolve around a sad, dowdy math genius played by a beautiful, A-List actress (Jessica Alba and Gwyneth Paltrow, respectively). Both of those geniuses start to neglect numbers when their fathers get ill, then are taught how to embrace life again by a studly male academic (Chris Messina and Jake Gyllenhaal, respectively). Oh, and both movies also appear to take place in a perpetual autumn. Did I miss anything?
That said, if you like flicks where CG digits float around as winsome piano pop plays, An Invisible Sign might be right up your alley. Watch the trailer below, then tell us: Do you think a pair of pigtails and some too-long bangs make Jessica Alba look like an intellectual? And were you, like me, also glad to see that Blair Waldorf’s gay dad is getting some work?

Who else answered no before they read the article?
I did.
I don’t buy Jessica Alba as an actress
I don’t buy Jessica Alba as a person.
I don’t know what’s more unrealistic, Jessica Alba as a math genius, or the fact that the principal just called up and offered her a job as a math teacher… apparently in perpetual autumn there aren’t 50 teachers going after every open position.
People may hate Gwyneth Paltrow, but no one can deny she’s a MUCH better actress than Jessica Alba.
Although that really isn’t saying much. My shoe is a better actress than Alba.
More believable than Denise Richards playing a scientist in a Bond movie.
Nope, too far.
Since when is Jessica Alba A-list? Don’t you have to open movies to 20M or win awards for that…being pretty qualifies as A-list status?
I don’t think she’s supposed to look “intellectual,” I think they were going for quirky, slightly antisocial and damaged. I think it looks like a great movie. It’s WONDERFUL to see Jessica Alba show her range and choose a role like this. She’s always mentioned her desire to do meatier things in interviews…
I have a problem with the pigtails, period. Maybe I’m just way out of the loop, but I don’t think many girls outside of high school (at the latest) rock the long pigtails anymore…
Obviously I came on here not cam on here….
denise richards as a nuclear physicist
Movie looks like crap but I am a huge Jessica Alba fan. Not sure why everyone hates her so much.
You have your opinion, others have theirs. Simple.
heck no….but then again, I didn’t believe her as a blind violinist either..so..
Six months ago this movie wasn’t going to be released. What happened? (I guess they found a distributor.)
She first of all, didn’t neglect numbers, she was consumed by them. As someone who saw the movie, let me tell you, it was amazing. The overall premise may seem hard to relate or whatever the comments were, but it was so much deeper than the surface. It wasn’t predictable, and it caught me off guard to see how brilliant Alba was. She is finally starting to act, and not just show up, look pretty, and read lines. It was a great movie, and people shouldn’t judge it solely based on your preconceptions about Jessica Alba.
Sorry to say, this currently has a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and 4.3/10 on IMDB. Not to mention I googled reviews, and none have been positive. I’ll be skipping this one.
This question translates: “Can a woman be pretty AND smart?” What a bunch of crap. You would never ask this question about a man, Entertainment Weekly.
