Peter Jackson revealed on Facebook this afternoon that his two-part adaptation of The Hobbit will feature one more familiar face: Ian Holm, who played the role of Bilbo Baggins in Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Holm will be playing the older version of Bilbo in the director’s upcoming film; Sherlock star Martin Freeman plays Young Bilbo. Though Holms’ participation in The Hobbit has long been assumed, it wasn’t confirmed until today. He joins a cast that already includes fellow franchise vets Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood, and Cate Blanchett, as well as a host of newcomers.

One problem: Bilbo wasn’t supposed to age after he found the ring.

Well, since “Old” Bilbo’s part will be reading his story to Frodo, AFTER Frodo destroys the ring, then in fact old Bilbo will have aged considerably at that point – just like he had once he gave the ring to Frodo and went to Rivendell.

My guess is that the scene with Ian will either be before Frodo has the ring, or it will be when Frodo and Bilbo are both in Rivendell.

The story contained within “The Hobbit” is going to be told as though Bilbo is telling it to Frodo or some such, which is why many of the actors from the trilogy will be appearing.

I’m excited that this is definitely happening, and am very much looking forward to seeing Iam Holm play Bilbo again.
Next on the list of returning actors that NEED to be confirmed: Hugo Weaving. Elrond is even in the original book! C’mon, what’s the hold up?

I’m pretty certain that’s already been confirmed!

Did anyone else see Peter Jackson’s quick update on Facebook today? He clarified that in that video he posted last week, it’s actually Martin Freeman saying “In a hole, in the ground, there lived a Hobbit”. I can’t believe how amazingly-like Ian Holm he sounds.

There and Back Again. In your case Ian Holms, that is so true.

Anyone here who doesn’t know how good Martin Freeman is please rent or buy the BBC (shown on PBS) series “Sherlock”. (And also see one of the greatest actors walking on the planet today who plays Sherlock).
The Hobbit will continue filming when Martin comes back this May to film the next 3 Sherlocks.

who is playing young bilbo again?

  • Idonotfear

Young Bilbo is being played by Martin Freeman. Aside from being outstanding in “Sherlock”, I first recognized him as Arthur Dent in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy”.

And also in the British version of The Office.

  • Longshanks Ghost

Don’t know who this gnome is, Leonard Nimoy is the best Bilbo.
