Farrelly brothers circling potential Moe for 'Three Stooges'

One actor up in consideration for the role of Moe in the The Three Stooges doesn’t have a household name, but it sure stands out on a marquee: Chris Diamantopoulos.

The 35-year-old actor, who played the president’s chief of staff on Season 8 of 24, has also appeared on The Starter Wife, Nip/Tuck and The Sopranos. He is no stranger to playing iconic figures, though the bowl-cutted Moe would be a change of pace for any actor. Diamantopoulous appeared as Frank Sinatra in the mini-series The Kennedys, and he played Robin Williams in a 2005 behind-the-scenes TV movie about Mork & Mindy

He’s married to Ugly Betty actress Becki Newton, and the couple had a baby last fall.

The Three Stooges, written and directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly, is not a biopic by any stretch of the imagination, but rather a fictional spin-off of the three knuckleheaded characters. $#*! My Dad Says star Will Sasso has already been cast as Curly, and Will & Grace‘s Sean Hayes is Larry.

Fox says no actor has a lock on the role of Moe yet, but acknowledged to EW that Diamantopoulis was among those who have been discussed for the part. (Variety reported the story.)

The original cast was better, give us Del Toro and Giamatti, but keep Sasso

hollywood really has to scrape the bottom of the barrel lately.. comicbooks and now this? come on

Yawn. No one wants to see this movie, why bother? This is the kind of movie you get from Netflix when the movie you really wants says “very long wait”. You cannot recreate the Three Stooges. This is going to be another bomb in a long line of Farrelly bombs.

What they need to do is simply not make this movie. I can’t in any way envision it being any good.

  • Arno

I think this movie’s a terrible idea, and I don’t like any of the Farrelly brothers’ movies, but, c’mon — get Bruce Campbell to play Moe.

  • joe luck

Wow, this movie went from having an interesting cast to bottom of the barrel, bargain casting huh?

  • WEG

Don’t bother. There is no way to recreate, copy or otherwise remake the Three Stooges. The fact that it would be in color would ruin it anyway. Stupid idea all around.

The script must be horrible if these no names are all they can get.

Terrible cast so far, guess it can’t get worse..

  • Kevin

He’s was great on 24 playing Rob Weiss, President Allison Taylor’s chief of staff turned political traitor but his last episode ended in Hour 15 and didn’t come back for the rest of the real time drama’s final season.

    Worst. Cast. Ever.

Fitting, since this could be one of the worst film ideas in decades.

They should just take the money they were gonna use to make this movie and donate it to a film school somewhere, at least there’d be some chance of a good movie coming out of it at some point.

Weird. I can see Will Sasso, and even Sean Hayes, but not Chris. This is going to be a really weird movie, and probably not in a good way.

I know many in the biz myself included and don’t be surprisedif Tom Cruise is a Moe

A 21 Jump Street movie? Good lord. Wake me when Quark: The Movie gets announced.

This guy’s a very talented actor. Just because he’s not a household name (yet) doesn’t mean he can’t kick ass in the role. He’s been really good in everything I’ve seen him in. Give the guy a chance. Sure, the movie might suck–I’ll admit it sounds like a bad idea to me, too–but Chris D. won’t.
