Director Adam Shankman has added one more name to the all-star cast of his big-screen adaptation of the ’80s-rock-and-roll Broadway musical Rock of Ages. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston will play the mayor of Los Angeles, whose wife (to be played by Catherine Zeta-Jones) is an ultraconservative anti-rock-music crusader. Cranston joins a cast that also includes Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, and Paul Giamatti. Rock of Ages begins shooting this month in Miami.

They should have cast Julia Roberts. I’ve always wanted to see Tom Cruise do a movie with her. They are both incredible actors and it would be amazing to see them bounce off each other in a film.

Julia Roberts is not an incredible actor.

        agreed

Tom Cruise is not an incredible actor.

Not an incredible actor, but a solid one (and has the Oscar to prove it), just like Tom Cruise. Sadly, being superstars will always cloud people’s perceptions.
I would also love to see if Cruise and Roberts have chemistry together.

Having seen the show I like don’t remember half these characters. Maybe I’m just being forgetful but if they are then they’re really small parts for such major celebrities.

Shankman said previously that he wrote CZJ’s part specifically for the movie, so I would assume they’re doing the same for BC. It kind of sounds like they’re filling some story points filled by Hans and Franz, but whatever.

He’s the best actor on Televison, on the Best Show. Good for him..

Woohoo for the Great Heizenberg!!! Best news ever!! It’s a testament to Bryan’s talents as an actor!! He’s truly one the best!! And rock of ages is shaping up to be a must-see!! I saw the musical five times in San Francisco and it was exhilirating, hilarious, awesome, epic, and just pure fun!

What a bizarrely intriguing cast they’re building. This isn’t a show I’ve seen or have much interest in, but the cast has me curious at the least.

  • Kathleen

Grrr… this isn’t a new part but the funniest part of the show was the father and son! Shanks looks to be ruining this!! The mayor is hardly in it because of the father and son.

    What a cast

  • Yo

What a cast indeed. Here hoping Adam Shankman doesn’t blow it.

The main problem is most of the cast members cannot sing a lick. Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and Paul Giamatti are not triple threat performers. All they do is just act. And, yes, Julia Roberts fits in that same category ( she was hideous in that Woody Allen musical ) . I predict huge problems with this production. What the hell is Adam Shankman thinking ?!

    • Moot

Have you heard them all sing? I’ve heard both Brand and Giamatti sing in films and they’re both very good.
Alec was passable in South Pacific.

  • aussie dave

oh sp, such a negative nancy. I don’t doubt you are right, but has anyone heard Tom, Alec, Russell or Paul G sing ? Also Adam Shankman did such a great job on Hairspray from a Broadway show, i’m sure he will make a strangely entertaining film. I’m trying to block out the fact ‘Nine’ had a great cast on paper, just saying !
