'Fast Five' scoop: Vin Diesel talks about that surprise twist ending and the future of the 'Furious' franchise

If you’ve seen Fast Five and stayed for the final credits, you know there’s a surprise Easter egg bonus scene that gives a sense of where the sixth movie in the street-racing action franchise might go. If not, well, READ AHEAD AT YOUR SPOILER-BLOWING PERIL. SERIOUSLY. The brief final scene shows Eva Mendes’ Agent Fuentes conferring with Dwayne Johnson’s Agent Hobbs about a robbery case involving Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty. Of course, fans of the franchise know that Letty, the girlfriend of Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto, was supposedly murdered by Fenix Rise (Laz Alonso) in the last installment, 2009’s Fast and Furious. So what gives? Diesel tells EW that if you watch the last movie carefully, you’ll see that it’s never actually confirmed that Letty is dead. “It was very deliberate, the way the Letty character was handled in Fast 4,” Diesel says. “It was very deliberate that you never saw the body. When Dom confronts Fenix, he says, ‘I don’t remember her face because the last time I saw her she was burning’ — not, ‘I shot her in the f—ing head.’ You’re going to learn more in the next one.”

As for that next movie, Diesel sees it as the conclusion of a trilogy that began with the fourth film, and fans now fully expect it to include a reunion of Dom and Letty. “In Europe they’re already calling six Sexy 6,” says Diesel. “They’re saying if Fast Five has the best fight scene, they expect the best sex scene to be in the sixth one. But that’s Europe. They’re romantics.” Diesel says he’s not sure at this point how much further the franchise will go beyond number 6: “If I were going to do it indefinitely, I’d have to do it in threes. So after the sixth, we’d have to map out the next three stories before I did the seventh. I’ll never do 7 without knowing what 7, 8, and 9 look like.” For now, he says, he’s just thrilled that the hit movie, with that surprise twist at the end, leaves Fast fans wanting more. “People are ready to buy The Fast and the Furious 6 tickets right when they leave the theater. That’s the accomplishment I’m most proud of.”

I am so for fast six! bring it on!

    • Liz Lemon

I am too. That last part of the credits sealed the deal for me. And they also hinted that The Rock would be returning to track down Lettie. I’m so excited! Hopefully the script will be just as good as the 5th movie. All the previous ones have been more about sex and fast cars than anything else.

    • harry

      bring on 6 baby!!!

  • Roger C.

    The last movie was HORRIBLE.

    • sam

you are in the minority — cinemascore gave it an A — it was one of the best action movies of the year.

      • K

“In THEIR opinion”….it’s not fact that it’s one of the best action movies of the year, its an opinion.

      • Rick

No, It is FACT that it is one of the best action movies of the year as the 83 million dollar opening, the A score from Cinemascore, and the 78% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes all tell you. It is way beyond anyone’s opinion that it is great, fun, and one of the best action movies of the year now.

    • Malika

what was so horrible about the movie lol?

    • tweeder1303

your stupid that movies was bad ass

    • timmy

who do u think u r this is the best movie ever

    • Dante G

Your stupid if you said fast 5 was horrible, the movie focused on the story more than the cars, what when it came to the cars, it was a bad ass scene.

    • Cyn

No it was not it was the best yet

  • Darrin

I’m just getting tired of the whole ‘after the credits’ scene – are you listening, Marvel?? I just sat through 5 commercials, 4-6 previews, the ad for the concession stand, and then the 2 hr. movie. Now, they want us to sit through another 8 minutes of credits just to see if there might be a 30-second scene? Can’t they put the scene in after the first few credits, before everyone has bolted the theater for the restrooms on the way to the car?

    • PJ

Actually, that’s exactly what they did.

    • Eddie

i dont know about Fast 5, but the end credits scene for Thor lasts longer than 30 seconds, more like 4 times that.

    • Malika

      5 thumbs up lol

    • tigger851

darrin- make sure you go potty before the movie starts and not take a drink to suck on during it, then you will be fine with sitting through the credits….

      • Rob

    I’m game!

Let us not forget that these last two movies are prequels to Tokyo Drift. I wonder how that would impact any follow ups.

    • Liz Lemon

Yeah I was wondering that too. I’m assuming they will just kill off Sung Kang’s character.

    • andrew

i think they would show everyone bolting to different parts of the world. then now they would probably continue tokyo drift and show how dom drifts and avenge his friends death

      • John

Dom wouldn’t avenge the death. The villain from Tokyo Drift was banished at the end, because he lost to Josh Lucas.

Fast Five is a very fun, cool, thrilling popcorn movie! It was great to be back in a movie theater, seeing a movie that totally got my full attention the whole movie and I really enjoyed the story. Hollywood has really been turning out some duds lately! Not many I am looking forward to seeing. I am one sad movie lover lately, but thankful for this totally mindless fun ride of Fast Five.

@DARREN..I’m an Assistant Director in the industry and worked on “FF3″ and “FF4″..(I did not do “Fast Five”) Is it too much to ask you to sit thru a few more minutes of credits to appreciate the people that put all the hard work into making the film you just (hopefully) enjoyed?

    • Darrin

Like I said before, it’s not just the credits, it’s everything the theater piles on BEFORE the movie that also adds to the amount of time sitting in the theater. Plus, end credits are a lot longer than they used to be, especially with big-budget films, as hundreds of FX and computer people all made contributions. I do appreciate the work you and all the other below-the-line folks do, it’s just a lot to sit through after everything else, on the off chance there might be more. Maybe the theater should post notes saying – don’t get up right away, there’s more to come.

Took the kids to see Rio over Easter. It was a “4:10″ showing. After previews and ads, the final-final previews started at precisely 5:00. My kids were already asking if they could go home.

      • philip marlowe

Its not a new thing, that things happen inthe end credits, some films show funny out takes then or continue showing how lives are going for the better, if your a massive fan of the fast and furious franchise like i am you have to watch it from the very start to very finish.

    • Jack

I’m surprised anyone who worked on those movies would brag in a public forum that they were responsible for that sh!t.

    • rerun

Mike, when I buy a car, I don’t see the names of everyone who worked on the car.

    • christine

i loved the whole movie and i would wait for ALL the credits to be over just to see that extra scene telling me about my favroite character is alive!

  • Mike

    Sorry DARRIN…misspelled your name.

  • Ian

You paid your money so its obviously your call, but I think you should sit through the credits and read as many of them as you can for every movie.

Give the people who worked on them their credit. This may sound silly, but I think its rude not to read the credits.

    • rerun

When I go to a restaurant, I always ask for a list of the chefs, dishwashers, wait staff, hostesses, managers, food vendors, and cleaning crew. It’s really just rude otherwise.

So excited to see Dom’s reaction when he finds out that Letty is alive. Say whatever you want, but those two have some major sexual chemistry. Can’t wait!

    • christine

      i agree!

  • tickles

I have always felt the only mis-step this franchise made was killing off Letty.
This news makes me very happy! I hope it is true! Michelle Rodriguez rocks and Letty and Dom generated some real heat!

  • Jasmine

I Loved Fast Five. I’ve Been a fan of the”Fast and the Furious” movies since day one. I can’t wait till part 6 comes out, and find out what happens when Dom finds out Letty is alive and back in business. They definately killed it with this movie, I think Fast Five is one of the best ones out of the series.

  • Brandon HArris

  • SEF

I could stand to see more. They can keep making them if they make them as action packed as #5. I hope they keep the series running. I would not be opposed to seeing Vin Diesel, or Rock Dwayne Johnson either. Keep the action movies coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • elissa

Heck yeah!!I think that’s a franchise we’ll never get tired of!!!

  • Jay
