The Schwarzenegger scandal: The career fallout doesn't just affect Arnold

Maria Shriver isn’t the only one with a broken heart. This week’s revelations about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s secret love child also have several Hollywood producers blowing into their hankies. Last week at Cannes, up-and-coming film financier Megan Ellison (True Grit) spent nobody knows how many millions for the rights to possibly make more Terminator movies with Arnold (sorry, Megan). Al Ruddy, veteran producer of Million Dollar Baby and The Godfather, was going to pay Arnold a reported $12.5 million to star in his first feature since leaving the governor’s office, Cry Macho (there, there, Al).

But of them all, the producers of The Governator, the animated series that was going to turn Arnold into a kid-friendly cartoon superhero, have had the hardest time dealing with the betrayal. Earlier today, after Schwarzenegger’s lawyers released a statement saying the ex-gov was postponing all his acting plans while he focused on his private life, the Governator producers seemed to have finally accepted the inevitable and come to terms with the impossibility of going ahead with a children’s TV show based on the life of Arnold Schwarzenegger. “In light of recent events,” they announced in a joint statement, “A Squared Entertainment, POW, Stan Lee Comics, and Archie Comics, have chosen to not go forward with the Governator project.” Less than two hours later, however, the Governator’s producers released a revised statement, this time putting The Governator project “on hold.” Apparently somebody involved — Stan Lee? A Squared’s Andy Heyward? — still thinks there might be a way to pull it off.

The Governator producers were having trouble adjusting last week, even before the love child headlines broke. After the Schwarzenegger-Shriver split was announced, the Governator team released a statement that said Maria Shriver was never intended to be a part of the animated series, directly contradicting what Stan Lee had told EW in our April 8 cover story (“We’re using his wife. We’re using his kids.”). Within a day, the producers sent out a revision, this time saying that “while some of the creative team initially planned on using his real family members, the final decision was to depict them as fictional characters.” In other words, Maria was being kicked out from the comic book, yes, but for reasons having nothing to do with the marital separation.

So, what’s the bottom line here? Will The Governator happen or not? We’ll let you know as soon as we can get these guys away from the Kleenex boxes.

Guess EW should have gone with Liz Taylor as the cover story instead of “The Governator”.

    • Al

      This.

    • MWeyer

Kai, you totally beat me to saying this and thank you for it.

      • The Queen

MWeyer = Equally useless and redundant

    • Le HIROSHI

Kudos to Kaiulani for bringing this up.

Looking back, the legendary Liz Taylor cover couldn’t have been more appropriate. But then again, everyone must “eat”; so, matter-of-factly, the choice back then was commercially understandable.

Side Note: Liz Tayler, you were so beautiful. RIP MADAM.

      @Benjamin,

Thanks for a good read, BTW.

    • dctoronto

I was just about to write that!

    • In retrospect…

That would have be the wise choice. It also would have been the better choice at the time. Maybe EW will stop trying to promote projects that haven’t even started yet (*cough* Hunger Games movie *cough*) over entertainment that is actually current and in the news.

      • MWeyer

Hey, I’ll take that over them wasting a cover on “Lost” A YEAR AFTER the final episode.

    • Mad Max

I’m still p!ssed that they did that.

  • vanessa

Yeah right. They’re crying all the way to the bank. Movie stars, politicians and bankers feed us poor hard working taxpayer everyline of BS they can think of to rake in the all mighty buck to live their lifesyle. I’m begining to envy the Amish.

    • Marianna

No, no, no. It’s the Modern Mennonites you want. They live a simplified life and eschew crass culture but permit themselves the convieniences of cars and electricity.

  • Marianna

My guess is they’ll just re-work the concept and change their target audience from kids to adults. They’ll do just fine. Plenty of debauchery taking place late in the evening on Toon.

    • The Queen

Shut your ugly yapper, Marianna. Fattie.

      • Marianna

Ah yes. Into every life a plop of The Queen must fall. Go back to baking your Nestle Troll House Cookies for the PTA dear, perhaps the janitor will notice and take some pity on your lamentably squat self.

  • Lannie

the teams working on governator probably just lost a year’s worth of work, and a ridiculous amount of money. i hope they sue arnold for it.

    • VickiH

I don’t see how, during his first campaign for governor there were allegations of him groping women on the set in the past and he said, and I am paraphrasing, that he had been a bad boy. I think I would have looked into that more before basing a family friendly comic on him.

      • Lannie

Are you freaking kidding? “They didn’t do their research, so it’s ok for them to suffer?” Four separate companies are involved here, and at least three of them are mom-and-pop companies. It’s there fault somehow? Jeez, not all companies are condemnable.

    • The Queen

      You sound intelligent.

  • Lorraine O’Connor

This is very sad. I’m sorry to hear this. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a terrific actor and seems like a decent guy. I was hoping he would make a triumphant return to movies and do more dramas. It is a shame that his marriage has collapsed. Marriage, in my experience, takes work. A lot of work.

My husband and I are just really open and honest with each other. We tell each other everything that goes on and everything that we’re feeling everyday, and we’re just really there for each other.

I think my husband taught me a lot about inner beauty and confidence in myself. I’m slim but voluptuous. He’s in love with the person inside of me, and the outside of me is just a bonus. I feel better—so much better now than I ever did in my twenties. I know who I am. And as a result, I feel much sexier.

    • Aaron Michael

I agree, Arnold seems like a great guy, I think its unfair for us to judge him without really knowing what was going between him and Maria 14 years ago. If my memory stands correct, I believe there was a “scandal” going on where Maria was cheating on Arnold.

      • Prince William

A “great guy”??? Yeah, I bet you’d really like it if your husband was doing the housekeeper – in your house – and kept her working there for 14 years after that. What a great guy!

    • anon

A great ‘guy’ or woman is honest, trustworthy, has integrity and cares about the impact they have on others. A great guy values and respects women as equals – as the spiritual human beings they are – not as sex objects.

    • Mo

That is the funniest thing I have read all day. Arnold the terrific actor and decent guy. I remember reading an article in Premiere magazine way back, around the time he was making Terminator 2, I think, and it mentioned how Arnold got a kick out of humiliating in front of his toadies this one particular crew guy. When the guy complained, Arnold justified himself with something like “some guys are born to lead, some are born to follow” or some such s*hit. Ever since I read that, I have wondered who the hell would put up with this ass*wipe. I’m obviously not even referring to the now famous article where they talked about what a pig he was with women, but an earlier piece that was meant to be a total puff one. If his arrogance and meanness could come across in that one, yes, imagine what a decent guy he’s always been.

  • Helen

I bet when she found out, Maria hit Arnold in the head with a telephone and then kicked him in the ribs calling him a pig and a bastard like Jamie Lee Curtis did to him in True Lies (1994).

  • Robert

Probably the worst political scandal in more than a decade, bad for Republicans everywhere. I mean c’mon the guy hid the affair and child, and allegedly used the power of the Governor’s office to cover it up. That is extreme corruption, plain and simple. Worse, he was a hero to many kids. Now he’s just a schmuck.

  • Caroline

Can’t they give it a try

  • Alice

He is a liar and unfaithful to his wife. He commits adultery and has no respect for himself and his families. I feel sorry for Maria. You just can’t trust a liar to be the governor of your country.

  • JT

Well I guess something good came from this.

  • Ron

The man for the cartoon Arnie job may now be Ralph Bakshi.

  • Anne

Dear Hollywood Powers That Be -

That steroid pompus, disgustingly poor excuse for a man, human being and father will NEVER profit a DIME from me nor from any intelligent female if you mis-guidedly fund his rediculous “comeback”.
Do any of you remember “winning!”? This is the next one…

    • Peg Bundy

Agree. This pig will never get my money for any product or movie whatsoever. Anyone who hires him is just asking to flush their money down the toilet.

  • rick

A fling is one thing, having your love child with someone very close to your family is just plain sick. Think, his love child and his child with his wife, maria, were born within weeks of each other. Sick.
