Donald Sutherland has officially been cast in the film adaptation of The Hunger Games as President Snow, the ruler of Panem. Lionsgate announced Sutherland’s casting in a press release this morning. Although Snow mostly lurks around the outskirts of the first volume of Games, he is unquestionably the series’ main puppet master (and hey, Sutherland starred in a film called The Puppet Masters!) A quietly malevolent figure who is shrouded in secrecy, Snow was described in the books as a thin and unassumingly small man — which aren’t quite the words that come to mind when you consider the 6’4” Sutherland. Still, the actor has certainly earned his epic-enigmatic bona fides — remember his Mister X in JFK? — and it should be interesting to see him play off Jennifer Lawrence’s spunk Katniss Everdeen. The Hunger Games is currently in production, and is currently slated for a March 23, 2012 release in theaters.

‘Hunger Games’: Meet the Cast!

I can get behind this choice.
This may be the best casting yet. He can be freaky and sadistic looking. Glad they got someone with some screen presence.
Yeah, he totally works for that part.
I was REALLY hoping for Bill Nighy. I am still optimistic but the movie is filled with established actors who bring their own past characters into this tapestry.
Love it!
Yes! I can just imagine him speaking with blood-stained teeth!
i literally just got chills reading this post. hes gonna be amazing.
Myra Arellano
Who will they cast as buttercup?
a) a very old geriatric cat that is also a great actor because after all in movies and tv old cats always play kittens.
b) a red or black cat with acting experience and awards nominations because after all color is not important they will dye its hair and acting is more important. Plus it’s impossible to cast a yellow cat that also has acting talent.
c) a black old cat that became famous not because his acting but its singing but had a 5 minute role in a movie and gary ross liked his acting.
d) Cate blanchet! She is an oscar winner actress and because of that she can pull off anything. If you don’t think she is the right one watch all of her previous movies. She even played BOB DYLAN!
e) a yellow mashed-in nose, half of one ear missing, eyes the color of rotting squad.
f) a squirrel or a dog because there is one thing called makeup and there’s also Hollywood magic.
G)None of the above they will just cut out Buttercup because he is a minor role.
This is great! Not exactly what I envisioned but completely appropriate. Hooray!
Not at all what I had invisioned, but I think he’ll be great!
Excellent choice! I had not thought of him, but he seems perfect.
EXACTLY what my reaction was. I hadn’t thought of him, but he is a GREAT choice for the role.
My thoughts exactly
He’ll be great.
Excellent casting.I still think they need to bring in Johanna and Finnick into this movie. Jennifer is allright, but the way she is dressed to look young isn’t going to appeal to us guys.
Get a life.
el camino, you are a douchebag.
Not really. With them cutting Madge, and all the named people in the Seam. All this is going to be is a cheesy Katniss,Peeta,Gale love triangle story, with a bit of the arena in it. But whatever as long as it doesn’t try and get sold Jennifer is seeing one of them off set. As though she would.
Oh sh*t, I didn’t know anyone had discovered time travel yet! So you’ve gone into the future, seen the movie and know for a fact that it’s been reduced to the love triangle and a few minor arena shots? gimme a break.
Johanna and Finnick doesn’t appear in the series until the second book. This movie is based on the FIRST book.
Doesn’t Finnick hit on Katniss before she goes on stage in the first book? Or does that happen in Catching Fire?
That’s Catching Fire. They might be able to stick Johanna and Finnick in somewhere. Maybe on a tape of past games or something?
They were both mentors in the 74th games, so they might stick them in as cameos so they’ll get introduced for Catching Fire.
there is supposedly going to 4 films, i dont know where they got the other one from (:
she isn’t supposed to be appealing, that is why a lot of guys ignored her, not like she cared though.anyway why don’t we take it one movie at a time… dont jump to the second movie when the first movie isn’t out
Surely think that that you just acknowledged. The pfceert purpose were on your word wide web that least complicated factor to know. I say to you, I certainly pick up irritated when individuals give thought to stresses them to really usually do not understand. You were hit a toenail upon the premium and in addition described out there whole thing without side effects , consumers might require a value. May probably be back to be more. With thanks
Aw man, I will always think of him (in part) as the Bennet girls’ father in Pride and Prejudice–he was so adorable and sweet in that movie! But he is a marvelous actor and I am sure he’ll be an excellent Snow.
me too! I love him in that role!
But this is fantastic casting. Another one I hadn’t thought about, but will totally get behind.
Haha, I just watched that again last night! He really was great in that movie!
I’m okay with it. I can deal.
It will be hard for me to see him as villain though. He usually plays such nice, fatherly characters.
You should watch Backdraft.
I know what you mean. He doesn’t have a villainous look (like Malcolm McDowell does, IMO). But he can definitely play the part. I think this is a great choice!
Yes! Malcolm McDowell was the actor I pictured as Snow. But yes, Donald Sutherland will do very well too. He looks so imposing in the sample shot, I can almost smell the roses and blood and get that queasy feeling.
You should also watch “The Eye of The Needle”. Good thriller in which he was a very bad man.
I always thought he was creepy in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, even though he played the protagonist.
Um…no — Backdraft, Outbreak, Italian Job, JFK….
I’ve seen Italian Job twice…he’s not the bad guy in that, is he?
Edward Norton is the bad guy.
Sweetness. I get the icy chills that I am suppose to feel when looking at the new President Snow.
Hmm….not at all who I pictured as Snow, but I think I dig it.
I had actually pictured Kiefer Sutherland for this role, instead.
I hadn’t really thought of him, but I like it. I think he fits the description pretty marvelously.
I have been saying Donald for Snow for MONTHS now!!! He’s who I pictured when I read the books. He’s very good at playing sinister. love it!!!
Really great choice! I had hoped for Kevin Spacey, but Donald Sutherland kicks ass too!
Spacey is villainous enough, but he’s too young. When I read that he was a small man, I was thinking Derek Jacobi.
not who i had in mind. was hoping for anthony hopkins or christopher walken, but i trust the casting people.
Ooo walken would have scared the poop out of me as snow. Heebie Geebies!! Interesting I never would have thought of him.
I totally agree with you! Christopher Walken – he would have been perfect! This guy sucks. Seriously, why are you all kidding yourselves he is not right at all. Why would you ruin a brilliant book with this bumfluff??
I know! He’s actually my coiusn, but he lives in Panama near the Coasta Rica border. I told his mom that he SOOO should be a model. He’s not only the cutest little guy ever, but he’s also the sweetest! Lunch one day sounds great!
or even david morse would have been great
like!
