Stuntmen to lobby Academy for award category

Should there be an Oscar for Best Stunt? A group of stunt coordinators plan to lobby the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors tonight for their own category at the annual awards. Veteran stunt coordinator Jack Gill (Fast Five) has been petitioning AMPAS for two decades now, to no avail. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the stunt coordinators are proposing that their award be handed out before the main telecast, though they want a clip of the presentation to be shown during the broadcast.

So would the addition of a Best Stunt award make you more likely to watch the Oscars? Or is the show long enough already that another prize (even if presented in abbreviated form) will make a bloated show even more so?

Of course there should be an Academy Award for Best Stuntman, Best Stuntwoman, and Best Stuntteam. These people risk life and limb for their craft. The Academy Awards should also award Maureen O’Hara and Doris Day a Lifetime Achievement Award before they die of old age.

I think stuntmen should get some recognition but maybe the “Best Stunt” category should be presented during the Technical awards ceremony.

      recognition yes! Academy award? no

      • stuntman

Your an idiot. Why not give out an award on a night of awards?

    • Redcatlady

      It’s only fair.

I’m fine with adding a Best Stunt Coordination to the awards, but not Best Stuntman because that would ruin the illusion that the actors are doing their own stunts (even though I know that they’re not doing all of them). It might even liven up the broadcast by showing a few mind-bending scenes. Then again, Best Sound and Best Special Effects kind of have that taken.

      thank you! my thoughts exactly.

Also it should clearly be for stunt coordinator anyway. Otherwise it would be like giving an academy award to the gaffer as opposed to the sound editor.

      • stuntman

huh??? what does the gaffer have to do with the sound editor???

Also while the coordinator designs the stunts, the STUNT MAN is the one who actually does the stunt. Its his ability and excellence that make it happen. Closer comparison would be director or writer to actor.

Yes, an award for Stunt Coordination would be cool, but not for Stuntman.

They’ve been doing this for years, it’s never going to happen, they need to just let it go. That’s why they started the Stunt Man Awards on Spike cause the Academy won’t recognize them. The Academy also doesn’t recognize comedic performance, or comedy film. The Academy wants to maintain it’s elite status by having a limited amount of awards, nominees, and winners. Otherwise they could turn into the Emmys, Tonys, or Grammys that award 100s of different categories most of which people don’t care about. That’s the Academy’s model and I’m sure they’ll stick to it, yet again.

I think we can all agree that Vic Armstrong should get some kind of recognition surely?

    • ks

Of course! stunt men and women are awesome and should be regocnized! I agree Vic and family need to noticed. movies like the Green Hornet! Fast Five, are all actual stunts 80-90% I would rather see stunts than some CGI stuff. I will go out of my way to watch real stunts!!!!!

    • Mr. Holloway

Vic Armstrong has Lifetime Achievement/Honorary Oscar written all over him, in my opinion.

I say Stunt coordinator and agree it’s long overdue.

I agree that there should be a Best Stunt Oscar that is handed out to the head stunt coordinator. I mean, if there is an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, than why not Best Stunt, which is a real visual effect that is performed by very skilled real people and not computers? Furthermore, there are 3 separate Oscars given out each year to short films that the public doesn’t even see (Live Action, Doc, and Animated), whereas the public is definitely seeing the stunts in the films. If the Academy wants to boost ratings, especially with young people, I would think adding stunts and stunt recognition would definitely make the Oscars more exciting.

I have mixed feelings on it. I don’t have a problem with Best Stunt Coordiantor or some sort of award recognizing the overall stunt choreophraphy and execution of a film. But I don’t think an oscar should be given out for best stunt or to a stunt person. You do realize some actors occasionally do their own stunts, rarely, but sometimes. So what if, say, The Rock does his own stunt in a movie? Could he then be nominated along with stunt people and WIN an OSCAR for crying out loud? I don’t think that is necessary or desirable.

  • Ethan

It’s a great idea, as long as it doesn’t try to focus on a single stunt or single stuntperson. The emphases should be on the film as a whole – just like they do with all other non-acting/writing/directing categories. Good God – didn’t it take them decades as well to even include Best Makeup? It’s a long process, but truly overdue, considering the role stunts have in the movie-making process.

There should be an award for best Extra.

  • Jonathan

Totally! and they should air it during the main telecast

  • Josh T Galloway

They give out many awards for categories that enhance what is happening on screen, sound, special FX and many others. Of course stuntmen should receive something. They are the ultimate special effect so maybe add them to visual FX category and not just award computer FX.

  • Layton Eversaul

Stuntmen/women have been an essential part of film making from the beginning, and it’s a shame they don’t have a category already. I would be saddened if they are denied.

  • Oscar

I’m in only if they recreate the stunt on the Kodak Theater stage.

  • ScriptySandra

How about an award for SCRIPT SUPERVISORS??? Or at least, the editors and directors could include them in their thanks when THEY win. Their job would be 1,000 times harder without the dedication and work of their SCRIPTYS!!!!!!!!!
