'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' is the fourth highest-grossing film overseas

It’s not quite Avatar, but this is certainly news Disney can’t be blue about: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has become the fourth highest grossing film of all time overseas. The magic number? $695.9 million. The three films that have bested it (thus far): The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, with $742.1 million; Titanic, with $1.2 billion; and Avatar, with a whopping $2 billion.

The Johnny Depp-starring movie isn’t doing half bad in the states either, raking in $211 million, bringing the Disney film’s global box office total to $907 million, the highest of any film in 2011. Now, if only those 3-D numbers could increase. Still, that’s a lot of rum.

At least it’s not another movie about a comicbook.

Johnny depp has proved that he is the king of box office not only in america but worldwide

I am glad this did well because the writing was so much better.

    • Nick

This is not an elitist question, I’m just curious, as a writer… how so?

Really wasn’t a fan of this one, The Curse Of The Black Pearl is still my favorite.

  • Nick

Sure it did well overseas, but it’s $211 million draw at home is still short of it’s huge $250 million budget. Not exactly an indicator of greatness…

  • scorpio9094

Nick, they do count the overseas grosses towards profitability. I think it’s safe to say that the movie is making money and there might be a fifth in the near future.

    • psychokittyface

There actually is a fifth film in development.

        NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    • Hey Now

From what I understand movie studios only get about 15 percent of the overseas gross compared to 50 percent of the U.S. gross. That means Disney will “only” be able to collect about 100 million of the overseas gross. Bummer.

      • Duh

That’s not true at all I don’t know where you heard that but that is complete crap

    • Nick

      @scorpio9094:
Of course, I’m not disputing that… I’m talking about the way a film is gauged from a good storytelling point of view, by its budget to domestic profit margin… I don’t know if you saw the film, but there really was no story to it, with all due respect…

The original Pirates took in over $305 mil domestically from a $140 mil budget, huge difference…

They’ll most likely make their money back after advertising costs, and @Hey Now is right, studios do lose a bit from selling distribution rights overseas…

There will definitely be at least a 5th & 6th, but I hope they come up with MUCH better scripts than the ones for the last three…

Good to hear since I loved this one. I like Curse of the Black Pearl more, but this one was a close second.

  • Realangst

I like to be entertained and this is one of the few movies that was actually shot in 3-D. Not manipulated afterwards to rake in additional bucks. Besides a fun story znd retaining charters, it is one of my favorite movie series of all time. Final Destination, LOTR, Charlie Chan, Raiders, the original 3 Star Wars, Fast & Furious. So I am happy to hear that there might be a 5 in the series. As Mr. DEPP said earlier this year, if the audience wants more, he’ll keep making POTC movies. He’s got to be loving having paid his dues to just have fun and provide for his family. I would pay to see another one. Bring back Orlando and Kiera!
