Ben Affleck didn’t have to look very far for the leading man of his next directorial effort, Argo. EW has confirmed that Affleck will be doing double duty behind the camera and in front of it for his upcoming political thriller about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. In his filmmaking follow-up to 2010′s Beantown crime hit The Town, Affleck will play a CIA agent who hatched a stranger-than-fiction plot about a phony Hollywood production in order to extract six Americans from Iran in the ’70s. According to Variety, which first broke the news, Alan Arkin and John Goodman are in final negotiations to costar. George Clooney is one of the film’s producers. After Argo, Affleck plans to keep his director’s hat on. The busy hyphenate recently signed on to helm an adaptation of Harlan Coben’s page-turner Tell No One, which was previously turned into a French film in 2006.

    Great headline. LOL.

    • Jenn

Agreed. It’s nice to see an EW use a bit of humor rather than using thier usual infantile formula: “Bachelorette EXCLUSIVE!!!”

  • Rolo Tomasi

Been very impressed with his directorial efforts.

    • Sam J

Gone Baby Gone was near Great. I was a bit skeptical b/c he was directing his brother, but Amy Ryan, Morgan Freeman and even lil’ bro Casey were all pretty good. Tension and drama, an entertaining movie.

      • Will

Amy Ryan was robbed of the Oscar…just sayin

  • Lauren

I think I like him better as a director than an actor.

    • Emilio

      Agreed. Can he reboot Daredevil?

      • Jon

There’s no need for that. No need at all.

    • kimmy

isn’t it funny how he can direct himself really well? The Town was easily one of the best movies he has starred in.

    • Rita

      @Lauren, I agree..

    • Rita

PS, I did however love his performance in “The Town” !!

    • justme

TOTALLY agree, he’s mumbly one-tone voice makes him a crap actor, btu he seems to be good at directing, so I say stick with that and stop multi-tasking, do what you do best and leave the other things to others who do it better.

  • Paul

I’m sticking up for this guy. I think all the huge embarrassing bombs taught him something. He’s been doing really good work lately and I hope the bashing stops for him.

    • stickittotheman

Well, he cashed in while he was hot. But, I liked The Town. Big Harlen Coben fan, so I am pumped to see his work interpreted on the screen.

I would highly recommend the French version mentioned in the article, Ne le Dis a Personne. It’s excellent.

Let’s remember…Tom Hanks was Turner and Hooch and the Money Pit before he was That Thing You Do, Castaway and Philadelphia. Affleck will have a similar career as he grows into a true movie star.

      • justme

Doubtful as Tom Hanks could do comedy, drama, he could ACT, whereas Ben has yet to show any real good acting chops.

      • Lynn

@just me, I recommend you watch Hollywoodland (he deserved an Oscar nomination) and The Town, if you haven’t seen them yet. He’s great in both and yes, I think the guy can act.

  • Smallville

    Good for him

    • Lily

      x 2

  • A-Fed

Affleck was the bomb in phantoms

    • rerun

      Agreed.

    • deedeedragons

I love that movie! Peter O’Toole in a gory horror? Brilliant!

  • Tevor

    Did he have to audition?

    • parkR

yes, but I hear he had to sleep with the director to get the part

      • Ezgi

u must read this. once u have started there is no tuinnrg back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murdered in 1945. her body was not fund until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos 30 minutes the dead girl will appear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy and paste to be saved

  • jason

He is was good in The Town..why not? Looking forward to this one for sure..

  • Joyce

All stars have their duds. This sounds interesting…as does the Harlan Coben adaptation. You go Ben!

  • Phyllis

I hope no casting couch was involved.

    • Helen

      LOL

  • Ian

I really liked the Town when I saw it last year but I just got around to seeing Gone Baby Gone and that was great too.

At this point, I’m on board for whatever he directs.

  • lisa

Let’s see if he can make a movie without having a character say f*** in every sentence.

    • Fred

      Criminals swear. Cry elsewhere.

      • lisa

No crying here…you say the same word long enough it loses impact, that’s the point. Affleck is an intelligent man. Would be refreshing to see it reflected in the dialogue.

      • Lynn

Because when I think of the Boston underworld, I think of polite language.

  • Person

He was terrific in the company men. That was an underrated gem

    • Ryan

The Company Men was excellent. Affleck is turning it around on all fronts.

    • lisa

I agree, Company Men was terrific. He made some unfortunate choices early in his career but is making up for it.

  • stuart

Remember, that one kid who did the Deviled Ham “Schmorgasborg” commercials was Mason Reese – NOT Ben Affleck. Man, that kid was kinda creepy.

    • AJ

      what???

  • juliax

Ben Affleck is such a bad actor, i can’t believe the director would cast him..oh, wait now i get it.

    • MN

      LOL

    • justme

Hahaha, too true. He has to make his own parts, not like Hollywood is banging down the door and offering meaty roles.

      • Lynn

Same reason Clint Eastwood had to direct himself in Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino, right?
