Madonna's 'W.E.' gets Oscar-friendly release date

The Weinstein Company will release Madonna’s W.E. in the heart of Oscar season on Dec. 9, the company announced today. The movie, which tells the story of two romances, one being between Britain’s King Edward VIII and American Wallis Simpson, will open initially in just New York and Los Angeles before a wider release in mid-January.

Madonna directed, produced, and co-wrote the film, and the cast features Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James D’Arcy, and Oscar Isaac. “Madonna beautifully interweaves past and present in W.E. It’s a very smart film, and a stunning feature directorial debut,” said Harvey Weinstein, in a statement. “I’m incredibly excited about this movie and I wanted to give it a prominent release date.”

Holy Crap…Did madonna do something right with movies?…curious indeed.

Directorial debut? I thought she directed a film a few years ago.

They discussed that in another article on here – she did a movie called Filth & Wisdom a few years ago, but since it’s like 81 minutes the Weinsteins feel they’re allowed to call that one a “short” in order to say W.E. is her directorial debut. But you’re right, that’s all spin and isn’t quite true.

“Best Director, Madonna”… just doesn’t sound right.

Actually really excited for this. And Abbie Cornish was so great in Bright Star.

I’d be enormously surprised if this were actually any good, but I have to admit, Madonna as Best Director would be the greatest acceptance speech of all time.

It’s time they stopped lying about W.E. being Madonna’s “directorial debut,” it’s idiotic. Harvey knows her 81 minute movie Filth and Wisdom is not a short.

Oops, I mean’t “hear” not “here.”

I haven’t heard/read anything but praise for the movie so far, and the woman has a very keen eye for things she’s passionate about. With Harvey’s muscle machine behind her she has really good possibilities here, but hollywood may or may not (unjustly) try to keep her out of the Oscar, though if W.E scores big, it would probably sweep the Golden Globes at the very least.
I’m very excited to see it, and how it does critics and award wise.

I’m intrigued. If there’s one thing Madonna doesn’t do, it’s put on a shoddy show.

Does this mean in 10 years we can expect a lady gaga movie.

The buzz on this film is not good. Madonna is a terrible actress, and I doubt she’s any better of a director.

Actually the buzz for this has been very positive. The test screening raved about Andrea Riseborough’s performance as well as the cinematography, score, and costumes. It is going to surprise the skeptics.
