Box office preview: 'Horrible Bosses' and 'Zookeeper' take on 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'

Since its debut last Wednesday, Transformers: Dark of the Moon has been utterly dominant at the box office, amassing a gigantic $204.4 million in its first eight days of release. This weekend, Horrible Bosses and Zookeeper will do their best to compete with Transformers, but the Michael Bay film is all but guaranteed another weekend atop the chart. That’s not to say that the newcomers won’t do well for themselves — they very well might — but in this battle between people, animals, and machines, I’ve got my money on the robots. Take a look at my box office predictions below.

1. Transformers: Dark of the Moon: $46 million

Last weekend (Friday to Sunday), Dark of the Moon earned a solid, though somewhat underwhelming, $97.6 million. Whenever you’re dealing with numbers that high, a hefty second weekend drop is in order. In 2009, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen dropped 61 percent in its second weekend, though we must keep in mind that that weekend’s grosses were substantially lowered by the 4th of July falling on a Saturday — the holiday is traditionally a poorly attended day at the movies. Because of this, and because audiences seem to genuinely be enjoying the movie (it received a solid “A” grade from Cinemascore), I’m expecting on a slightly smaller drop of 55 percent, which would give the action flick a robust $260 million by Sunday.

2. Horrible Bosses: $27 million

It’s been a great summer for R-rated comedies, with The Hangover Part II, Bridesmaids, and Bad Teacher all achieving box office success. Horrible Bosses, which stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis as embittered employees who decide to kill off their bosses (played by Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, and Kevin Spacey), looks to continue that trend. Bosses has strong reviews, an A-list cast, a great title, and a marketable premise — a pretty solid combination. Advertising has been strong, and audiences have exhibited a clear appetite for edgy humor at the box office lately. I see this opening similarly to 2010′s Dinner for Schmucks, which started off with $23.7 million on its way to a $73 million finish. With better reviews and its hugely recognizable cast, Bosses, which starts its run in 3,040 theaters, might improve on that figure and earn a not-at-all horrible $27 million.

3. Zookeeper: $21 million

Zookeeper may be earning some wretched reviews, but that shouldn’t stop the $80 million Kevin James film from opening fairly well at the box office. Whether you like them or not, family-friendly comedies that feature talking animals and buffoonish main characters sell well, and for every person rolling his eyes at a movie like Beverly Hills Chihuahua or Yogi Bear, there’s another person going out to the theater to see it. James found major success with 2009′s Paul Blart: Mall Cop, which opened with $31.8 million and grossed $146.3 million total, and last year’s Grown Ups ($162 million total) again proved that audiences enjoy the comedic actor.

Zookeeper, which will play in 3,482 theaters, is arriving soon after fellow animal movie Mr. Popper’s Penguins, which opened to an alright $18.4 million three weeks ago. With a simpler premise and animals that can actually talk, I think Zookeeper could improve on that film’s opening and earn $21 million this weekend.

4. Cars 2: $15 million

The tepidly reviewed Disney-Pixar sequel has decelerated much faster than most animated films at the box office. Last weekend, Cars 2 fell by a troubling 60 percent, partly due to weak word-of-mouth, and partly due to Transformers stealing away some of its 3-D screens. I don’t think the film will continue to skid off the road at that alarming rate, but another 40-45 percent drop (still quite large for an animated Pixar movie) down to $15 million would give Cars 2 about $150 million total at the end of the frame.

5. Larry Crowne: $8.3 million

It’s going to be a tight race for fifth place between Larry Crowne and Bad Teacher. On the one hand, the Cameron Diaz comedy has been performing substantially higher than the Tom Hanks/Julia Roberts collab since last weekend. On the other hand, Larry Crowne‘s target audience is far older than Bad Teacher‘s, and grown adults, who are actually busy with work during the week, don’t feel the need to rush out to the theater on opening weekend, which means that a small drop of about 35 percent is probably in store for Larry Crowne. I see the film earning about $8.3 million, with Bad Teacher finishing close behind.

What a wretched movie Transformers is! Worst film I’ve seen since Inception.

    • Jenckles

Here come multiple comments from film snobs/Nolan fanboys calling you names.
Hey everyone, people are allowed to have a differing opinion. Inception is good, but not a masterpiece like everyone claims it to be. In fact, it is not even Nolan’s best movie (honor goes to Memento).

      • AK

I just find it hilarious how defensive and aggressive everyone on this board who doesn’t like “Inception” gets. Somehow, you are better because you thought less of the film? Some people thought it was a masterpiece, you didn’t—let’s move on. It’s been a year already!

      • Reid Wright

To not like it is one thing, but to imply that it is a bad movie suggests ignorance to the enth degree. I didn’t like The Kings Speech, but i can appreciate it was a well written and well constructed movie. No need to be such a troll about the whole thing.

      • Larry

Not as defensive as Inception fans get. Somebody can’t just not like it, they have to claim that if you didn’t like it “you didn’t get it maaaaan.” I got it, I just didn’t like it. Was it better than crap like Transformers? Sure, but that’s not saying much.

      • Frank

Sorry, but Transformers 3 and Inception were the two films I saw in the past year that I couldn’t wait to end. They had good visuals and nothing else. Two-dimensional characters that I didn’t care one iota about. Mindless action that had a terrible sense of geography. I became numb watching the both of them. Granted, I’ve pretty much hated everything Bay has done and TF3 is no exception. However, Nolan is a better filmmaker than that. Memento is a masterpiece. Nevertheless, Inception is a clear example of the emperor having no clothes. If someone besides Nolan directed it, it wouldn’t have had the rabid response that fans gave it.

      • dipshat

Memento-One of the best crime thrillers ever.
        Inception-Pretty Good.

      • Doug

Dude, Frank is a troll fishing for Nolan fanbois. He’s a troll because anyone remotely serious would concede its a good movie. Either that or he is easily confused.

      • Doug

ok, I read Frank’s comment to his own post, and I don’t think he’s a troll. Good arguments, but his original post was definitely bad.

      • Frank

I find it interesting that my comment that Inception is bad is somehow construed as trollish, but my criticism of Transformers is perfectly fine. That mentality is extremely… suspect.

      • Dirk

Well Frank, Inception is widely considered to be a good to great film. I haven’t seen it myself, so I don’t have an opinion of it. While Transformers…well, I think if pressed, even Michael Bay would probably admit that it’s not a good movie.

      • Rowzdower

To Frank: Why are you sorry that Transformers 3 and Inception were the two films you saw in the past year that you couldn’t wait to end? If anything, be happy you got up and left the theater; don’t apologize for it. Good lord lol

      • Necro

AK, I concur, there are those that love to trash Nolan and fans of his films and perpetuate the myth that they’re snobs. Compared to Transformer movies, Inception is a masterpiece by default. BTW, @Jenckles, Supernatural is garbage.

      • Steve-o-reeno

“Inception”? MASTERPIECE. How this didn’t win the Oscar for editing and best picture eludes me.

    • encuo12

      good

      • lydia

Zookeeper looks like crap. What happened kevin james you should be smarter than this.

    • Blue Silver

The biggest reason that people knock,”Inception”, is simply because they didn’t understand it. How many people saw it 2x/3x and still didn’t get it???
We as an audience have become snobbier and pickier when it comes to a Fri./Sat. movie. Perhaps, some of us should read a book, instead!!!

  • Paris

your opinion about inception has told me all i need about you

    • poop

      ^ This

    • Frank

Judging someone based on their opinion of one film tells me all I need to know about you. Plus, having someone named “poop” whose sole debating skill is typing “This” is not helping your case.

      • m1

        (like)

      • Justin P.

Haha, good point, Frank. I didn’t think Inception was bad at all. But, I didn’t find it great either.

      • A-rod

Frank, my question is, if you pretty mcuh hate everything Bay has done, whay are you wasting your time and money seeing TF3?
Oh, and I liked Inception quite a bit but it is not for everybody, no movie is!

      • Frank

@A-rod I’ve always had an affinity for the conceit of the Transformers. Despised the first one. Skipped the second upon hearing that even those that liked part one couldn’t stand it. Most reviews said that the third was the best of the bunch and that the final hour plus the 3-D were amazing. They were dead wrong. In fact, the final hour was just painful to sit through. It really was akin to the snow fortress scene in Inception. Didn’t know where anyone was. Bad guys just came out of nowhere and then disappeared at random. Most crucially, I didn’t give a lick about our protagonists. Trust me, this was the final straw for me and Bay. At least, the 3-D was good. :)

      ^This*

*I agree with Paris’ comment, not Frank’s.

  • bit

“family-friendly comedies that feature talking animals and buffoonish main characters”

so that is a sub-genre now?

    • Grady Smith

Well, after Alvin and the Chipmunks, Yogi Bear, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Cats and Dogs, Dr. Dolittle, Hop, Underdog, G-Force, and Garfield, I’d certainly say so! :)

      • Josh

        Agreed.

  • Vin

I hope Horrible Bosses does well. Can’t wait to see it this weekend! Given the poor taste in movies for most audiences, Transformers 3 will likely be number 1 again, and Zookeeper will probably make quite a bit. Seriously, who greenlit those two movies? I guess some moviegoers today are desperate to watch anything. How sad.

    • arabang

I am sure your waiting for the movie of the decade Harry potter.Ha!

    • Meg

Why do some people take films so seriously? Do people really feel bad for moviegoers who choose to see so-called bad films? Do people really think it’s “sad”? Do people truly “pity” other people over their movie taste? Hello? Stop the hyperbole, for crying out loud. It’s just movies.

  • Tony

“The tepidly reviewed Disney-Pixar…” Wow, how many times do we get to read those 5 words on any entertainment article? After such an extraordinary streak of amazing films, it’s weird to see a Pixar film doing so bad critically. I hope that BRAVE is more akin to the Pixar we all know and love.

    • wha’ever

I feel like a lot of critics were against this movie in the first place, because the sequel was basically (admittedly) made to sell more toys – I know I was. However, the movie is not half bad, definitely way better than the first one.

  • m1

I have three things to say:
    1. Transformers will be number 1 (again).
    2. Horrible Bosses will do wonderfully.
    3. Nolan’s fan-tards need to yank the sticks out of their asses.

  • Darrin

Ahh, Zookeeper – another movie that gets “wretched reviews” but somehow gets no worse than a B- from one of EW’s oh-so-credible movie critics.

    • Regina George

That’s because it’s getting “wretched reviews” from all the critics who don’t understand these kinds of films are not high-quality dramas looking for Oscars. They’rr just aiming to provide entertainment on a hot day. EW understood that, so Zookeeper was awarded a B- because it did what it was supposed to do. And the target audience for this film could care less what the critics have to say. I’m not really sure why Darrin had to bring this up.

      • Darrin

I brought it up because once again Owen is one of the few critics who gives a positive grade to yet another widely-panned film. And, his review doesn’t say – for those with low expectations who just want a cheap laugh, this is the movie for you – his review actually doesn’t say much positive about it at all, but still gives it a B-. Once again, critics aren’t comparing movies like “Zookeeper” to Oscar-bait like “The King’s Speech”: it’s not some sliding scale as many people somehow believe, the movies are judged and rated on their own merit.

  • John

97 million over three days is “underwhelming.” Hilarious stuff, EW. Eventually you’re going to have to realize Transformers is a popular success.

    • Grady Smith

Remember, though,’Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ earned $109 million in its first weekend without the advantage of 3D ticket prices.

  • LOL

If you see Zookeeper, then the terrorists have won.

  • topan

TRANSFORMERS #2,3 IS THE WORST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN

  • Josh

Who really cares? The big question is, exactly how badly is Harry Potter going to beat Transformers next weekend?

  • Greg

Zookeeper looks like crap. What happened kevin james you should be smarter than this.

    • Rah-tard

He made the Mall Cop movie… everything else is a step up from that

  • saul

F*ck you all! transformers 3 is the best movie ever damn haters all running their mouths I bet you all payed to go see the movie– stop hating!

    • STFU

Saul, learn to spell before going on a rant. It’s hard to take you seriously when you can’t spell paid.
