Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows–Part 2 has already collected $25 million domestically from advance ticket sales, according to Warner Bros. (Variety first reported the news.) The majority of the sales have reportedly been for midnight screenings, giving Deathly Hallows a legitimate shot at beating the $30 million midnight record set last year by The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The final Harry Potter film will also be aiming its wand at some other box-office milestones, such as the largest opening day (currently The Twilight Saga: New Moon with $72.7 million) and the biggest opening weekend (The Dark Knight with $158.4 million).

Deathly Hallows opens early Friday morning with midnight showings. The 3-D movie also debuts this week in every major foreign market except China (where it premieres Aug. 4), meaning the worldwide-opening record of $394 million (set by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) could also be in danger. Check back with EW.com throughout the weekend for more box-office updates.

I wonder why they’re not releasing it in China concurrently. With the piracy market there so huge, it seems like getting the movie there faster would have been the best move.

    • dm

Could be the opposite thinking. Make it harder for the pirates to get a shot of the screening before it plays to the global audience.

Warner Bros. would love to open in China at the same time but China won’t let them.

    • tim

Warner Bros would love to but China only lets in about 20 foreign films a year and right now they are showing “The Founding of the Republic” a state sponsored historical propoganda film. You can read about it at CNN’s website. Fareed Zakaria wrote about it the other day. EW wouldn’t let me post the link, sorry.

      • thjoden

And TF3 got its premier postponed to this weekend for this propaganda film too. I guess we are lucky enough to be able to see it, poor Indonesians…

    • Shannon

actually, China has put a stop to any foreign movies for the next month or so. they are celebrating the anniversary of the communist party by forcing everyone to watch a movie about its history!

  • fbdbpw

So hope it beats twilight’s record

    • Regina

For real. It is RIDICULOUS that that movie holds that record or, furthermore, that it made that much money altogether. I will *never* be able to understand the appeal of that series as long as I live. From what I’ve been able to tell a lot of it is older mothers and grandmothers who ride in to the theaters on their daughter’s curtails or because they think it’s the “cool” thing and even though deep down they know the movies SUCKKKKK, they act like they love it just because they think it’s “it.” That’s just what I’ve gathered from the people I’ve known. I tried to give the movies and books a chance and keep an open mind and heart but it saddens me deeply that this, of all things, became so durn popular. It’s a dang shame.

It’s going to break it. But it won’t stand you do know this right? There’s a movie coming out November 18th called Breaking Dawn. It’s the most anticipated movie in the entire series. Eclipse wasn’t even the most anticipated movie. So revel in your temporary win but it’s going down November 18th without a doubt LOL.

Voldemort’s demise vs. Bella & Edward’s Honeymoon…put a fork in it, it’s done! Guys are coming out for this one trust me. Have you seen the leaks? The leaked videos and pictures are hot as hell.

By ComicCon trust me when I say this, it will be Potter who? Potter what? The media will be swarming to San Diego watching all the Twihards camp out for Hall H. Watch, mark my words.

Once all the hype is done this week, it will be about ComicCon next week and we can all say, “It’s been a nice ride boy wizard but we’ve grown up now, time to move on because a new Batman is coming out and a new Hobbit movie. Have fun at the theme park” LOL!!!

Ugh- I hate it when the kids are out of school…..

      • Andrew

You know what “Haters”, Harry Potter will always be more loved than the horrible Twilight series. Kids that are now teenagers have grown with these movies and will never forget them. What they can forget is the horrible acting and terrible plot lines in your Twilight series. If Breaking Dawn does break records, who cares? EVERYONE knows Harry Potter will forver REMAIN highest grossing franchise in movie history. New generation of kids will ask,”What’s Twilight?” while teens now will turn into parents and show their kids the beloved Harry Potter series.
        So. SUCK. ON. THAT.

      • Nat

Twilight series are crap. If you look at critics reviews for those movies, you can see that its crap. Currently Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes where they have these top critics giving critiques on real movie making with a good plot (unlike Twilight which has never made a percentage and will never make it that well) and I’ve the mind you. Let me tell Stephenie Meyers twilight storys are not as brilliant and very well written as J.K. Rowling!! Just as Stephan King!

        Vampires are really, really gay.

      • Shells

I think Breaking Dawn will do well but I don’t think it will beat Deathly Hallows 2, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the Twilight films/books. It’s because the Twilight films have a specific, female audience going to see it. Harry Potter’s audience, in comparison, is much bigger: male and female, kids and adults. And it’s in 3D which is a more expensive ticket price.

      • challenge laughed at

You are correct, the media will be watching you. And laughing at you.

Sincerely, California gays who couldn’t marry because Sparkly Bipolar Mormon Vampires Who Look Like Girls Except Prettier And More Glitter, they helped pay for Prop 8.

Keep fighting all you want. In the end, come 2014, AVATAR 2 will indeed obliterate not only Twilight but DHP2. In fact, I can guarantee you that the sequel to the biggest-grossing film of all time will gross more money than BREAKING DAWN part 1 and DEATHLY HALLOWS part 2 COMBINED….
So, enjoy your victories for now, in 3 years, James Cameron will own you all.

      • RT

@Haters — you do realize, don’t you, that the US does not exist in a vacuum? Harry Potter and Twilight may be competitive in the US, but worldwide each and every Potter movie has left Twilight in the dust.

      • RT

@Haters — you do realize, don’t you, that the US does not exist in a vacuum? Harry Potter and Twilight may be competitive in the US, but worldwide each and every Potter movie has left Twilight in the dust. No contest.

      • Nirveeze

@Haters – aww, you are adorable! Do you know nothing about Breaking Dawn, and the major backlash it caused? It might open big, but mark my words it will be significantly less than New Moon and will hold one notorious record, the highest Friday to Saturday drop of all time.

      • Megan

@Haters Over 450 million copies have been sold of Harry Potter and has been translated into 67 languages. Twilight has sold about 100 million and has been translated into 37 different languages. People will start saying “Harry who” when they start saying “Les Miser-whaaa” and “What’s this Bible thing all about?”

      • dizzy

        Ugh, you’re back…

    • Dumbazzes

Why is it so important for HP to beat Twilight’s record? I don’t understand. It didn’t beat it with the Deathly Hallows Pt 1 so were you saying back then?

      • Mark

        Because Twilight is Sparkly-Dracula-goes-to-Sweet-Valley-High crap.

    • m

I always liked this quote from Stephen King about the Harry Potter vs. Twilight debate: “Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.”

      • Encore

Right on, Stephen King. He’ll be among the many to see Deathly Hallows 2, I’m sure. I’d love to read his thoughts on the movie and another huge part of the Potter universe coming to a close.
More columns from Mr. King, please EW.

    • Kyu

I think it’s obvious they are toeehtgr. In every photo I see of her she is wearing his jacket, they’ve been seen kissing and holding hands. I think he is just a very private person and he probably wants to protect her. I’m sure they just want to have some privacy wirh their relationship. I think she’s pretty darn adorable and they look so cute toeehtgr

  • shlamc

I will skip the 3D version.

    • Mark

      I skip all 3D versions

    • Heather P

I saw it in an advance screening on monday. I’d never seen a 3D movie before. The nausea and headache after the movie assured that I will never see another 3D movie again.

      Movie was good though.

  • Robert

2-D first then I’ll see it again in 3-D. Cant wait

    • chris

@robert: doing the same thing! tonight in 2D and 3D later on.

  • hillary

Chinese Rules SUCK why wouldn’t they let their people be happy Harry Potter fans people there are probably really upset!

  • JC

What is this “Harry Potter” everyone keeps talking about?

    • ?

I think it’s the title character on that Kathy Bates show on NBC…

    • Mike

I think the Counting Crows wrote a song about his mother or something.

      • Mario

Now that was a clever comment!

    • HP who?

I don’t know. It’s about some kid with a wand that can do magic and wears glasses but doesn’t have enough sense to make contact lenses or drum up a spell to help him see better.

      Pretty stupid eh?

      • Derrr

Yes, almost as stupid as a bored Mormon housewife who wrote some books about vampires feuding with werewolves over some chick whose representation in the film version looks like she has Down’s Syndrome.

    • Will

I think his mom wrote those rabbit books…Rene Zellweger played her in a movie once…I didn’t see it, so I don’t know if Harry is in it or not

  • Dawn

Saw it here in Sydney at midnight! love how they complete cut out one of the kids from the final scene. Can you guess which one?

    • The Hypnotoad

I know Teddy got the chop LOL!

    • Pash

If it was indeed Teddy, I’m not surprised. They barely even delved into the Tonks and Lupin relationship. If a blink and you missed it wedding announcement in the last movie was all we’d get then I’m sure they aren’t going to bother paying some to show up and be Harry Potter’s FREAKING GODSON!

      • Pash

Why are you complaining about spoilers when the book has been out for 4 years?! Sheesh. How long are we supposed to wait until we are allowed to talk about it?!

      • Greg

Yes, the real “dumbazzes” are the ones who can’t figure out how to crack a book.

  • Dustin

C’mon, Harry! Beat those stinking robots, er, transformers!

  • Dave

Skipping out on the 3D. It’s unnecessary. 2D all the way!

    • Mike

Only way to see IMAX is to get 3D…so I find it necessary! Just hope the 3D doesn’t detract too much from the movie.

      • MPH

I agree – bought my tickets for midnight two weeks ago not realizing I was getting the 3D version. I kind of wanted to see if first in 2D. But what the hey – I’ll see it at least two more times before it leaves the theater anyway. Going in costume Fridya a.m. as McGonagall with my daughter as Hermione….so bittersweet!

  • azizi

@JC I’m wondering the same thing

  • Mya

Definitely not seeing this in 3D, but 2D, heck yeah! Potter and Transformers are set to dominate this weekend. All other movies will be afterthoughts from now until the release of Captain America which is tracking near 70 million dollars and still a week and a half away.

    • @Mya

$70 million, really? I’ve seen mid-$50s million, tops, but OK.

      • g

It’s 50 not 70. If it’s 70 give us the person who’s reporting it. This person is FOS>

  • Karshov

Omg, I have court today at 12 noon, If I go to prison before seeing this ending HP film, someone’s going to be an unlucky cell mate. I didn’t wait 10 years for this. I will escape to watch it if I have to.

    • Mike

Say hi to the dementors for me!

  • awff1235

    偶路过来瞧瞧

  • levia1523

I am seeing it tonight here in Belgium!

  • PNK

I gotta go get my two-showings-in-a-row tix asap – just like I did for OotP!
I’ll be in a theatre for like 6 hours on Friday…
