Johnny Depp developing 'Night Stalker' and Paul Revere movie projects

After finding massive success with Disney thanks to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and last year’s Alice in Wonderland, Johnny Depp is ready to expand his partnership with the studio well beyond Captain Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter. EW has confirmed that, as first reported by Deadline, Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil, has worked out a deal with Disney to develop two major movies for Depp to produce and potentially star in. The first is an adaptation of the cult 1970s TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker, a sort of precursor to The X-Files about a newspaper reporter named Carl Kolchak whose investigations of mysterious crimes lead him into the realm of vampires, werewolves, zombies, aliens, and the like. The second is a big-screen take on the story — well-known to schoolchildren everywhere and in the news again recently thanks to Sarah Palin — of the midnight ride of Paul Revere.

Depp isn’t officially set to star in either project at this point. But he has long expressed a nostalgic fondness for The Night Stalker, and the role of Kolchak (originally played by Darren McGavin) has to be tempting for him — indeed, it almost seems inevitable given that Depp is currently shooting a film version of another of his childhood TV obsessions, the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. As for Paul Revere, well, what movie star wouldn’t jump at the chance to portray an American patriot who rode through the countryside ringing bells and warning the British not to take away the colonists’ guns … or something like that?

Little known fact: The man who did the warning of the coming British was Israel Bissel. His poem “Ride, Israel, Ride” was not as pobular as “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere”. He traveled 345 miles from Phillie to Mass, while Revere’s ride was only 20 miles. Cool huh? You can pick up chicks with this littel tidbit.

I loved the remake with Stuart Townsend(one of few,CANCELLED WAY TO EARLY) a few years back. Hopefully this will show the full story of Kolchak

I have the DVD set of the original Night Stalker and some of those episodes still creep me out to this day. Every time I hear a motorcycle I’m afraid to look – there might be a headless rider on it! O_O

When I was a kid I was such a scaredy-cat–except when it came to watching “Kolchak: The Night Stalker”. Creepy and, more importantly, kind of funny! Darren McGavin played Kolchak as a grumpy mess, but I could see Johnny Depp playing Kolchak. After all, Captain Jack was a drunken mess! I can also imagine J-Depp playing Barnabas Collins in a Dark Shadows re-boot….

These could be good projects and I’ll always be a huge fan of Johnny Depp, but I hope he’ll get back into some more original territory as opposed to adaptations.

The Stuart Townsend remake was OK, but his Kolchak was too dark. Few actors could pull it off the way McGavin did. Can Depp?

certainly like your web site but you have to check the spelling on quite a few of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to inform the truth then again I’ll certainly come again again.
