At the Hall H presentation for Steven Soderbergh’s butt-kicking thriller Haywire, director Steven Soderbergh addressed those reports about his supposed retirement — and where they came from. “Matt Damon is about as discreet as a fourteen-year-old girl,” the director told EW’s own Anthony Breznican, who was moderating. “I had this drunken conversation with him in Chicago shooting Contagion,” he said, adding then he read the reports in the paper a few days later. While he praised the actor’s good memory (“he remembered it almost verbatim”), he said that he wasn’t as serious as he had implied. “I was just sort of going off,” he said. In this economy, “No one wants to hear about someone quitting a good job. It got blown out of proportion. That’s Matt’s fault!”
Check out the brand-new trailer for Haywire below!

Blown out of proportion? This article is the first I’ve heard about it.
Yeah it was all over the entertainment news a few months ago.
Looks pretty cool – great cast!
Looks like a great cast….and like I’ve seen this movie before. But, I’ll probably see it.
Justine Bourne
Evelynita Salt? Jamie Bond?
Salt was already a chick…
Haha yeah she was.
Soderberg: Wouldn’t have heard about it if you hadn’t elaborated on it. Could’ve said simply “no” to the question asking him about retirement. Even if it’s true, calling out Damon gives this story some flash.
You can’t just say “no” to that question without elaborating. People made a big deal about him retiring and they obviously wanted to know why he would have changed his mind.
If Soderbergh was speaking and the quote was written down, then the writer needs to learn the difference between discreet and discrete; you meant the former but wrote the latter. They sound the same, but two separate meanings.
Synonyms, spelling, punctuation, meanings of similar words…I wish more people would take the time to get them right. Making mistakes like that continually…or it is continuously…IDK, but you get my point. Sticklers, unite! Or untie…the ropes that bind you!
The quotation in the article should read “discreet,” not “discrete.” These two words have entirely different meanings.
Nothing against Soderbergh, but he directed the endlessly overrated Erin Brontosaurus or whatever it’s called, featuring an equally overrated Julia “I Love Me” Roberts performance, which robbed Ellen Burstyn of the best actress Oscar for Requiem of a Dream, which was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen in film. Whew. Glad I got that off my chest.
I absolutely agree with every thing you just said. I will also say though that he should have won Best Picture that year for Traffic. That was a great movie.
JANUARY?!!?!?!?!?
I’m glad to learn Soderbergh isn’t planning on retiring, but Haywire (at least as the trailer shows it) looks like an extremely cheesy, derivative Bourne-with-a-female protagonist imitation (which Salt essentially already was), buoyed, if at all, only by its big name cast.
But he announced it himself on NPR, not through anonymous sources…
Damon may have spoken out of turn but Steven confirmed in at least 3 different interviews that he was retiring. So he either lied then or he has changed his mind. Putting it all on Damon is just stupid.
Whoa, calm down. I’m like 90% sure blaming it all on Damon is a joke.
matt should just keep his mouth shut.he always puts his foot in it on almost everything he talks about.
Maybe it’s the trailer guy’s voice but at first it looked like a mock-trailer done for some kind of comedy show. Then, it just looked sucky.
Mignon, my best friend, is announcing her wedding with a multi-millionaire young man Bruce, who is the CEO of a group. What’s more interesting? The pair met at a high class millionaire dating club —www.H O t t I E o n LY.CoM—, which is noted for the high quality of its members and its friendly atmosphere. While, you don’t have to be rich to join them, as you will be able to meet someone rich. Enjoy it!
