Box office update: 'Cowboys & Aliens' edges past 'The Smurfs' to win weekend with $36.4 mil

While it doesn’t change the fact that it performed a bit below expectations this weekend, at least Cowboys & Aliens won’t have to say it was defeated by some smurfin’ cartoon critters. According to actual figures released Monday afternoon, Cowboys & Aliens won the weekend with $36.4 million, while The Smurfs followed closely behind with $35.6 million. A mere $800,000 separated the two movies from one another — a result so close that a winner couldn’t be declared until today.

Most box-office prognosticators (myself included) thought Cowboys & Aliens — a $163 million Western/sci-fi hybrid directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man), produced by Steven Spielberg, and starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford — would easily win the weekend with an opening of at least $40 million. But Universal’s high-concept film had trouble attracting younger moviegoers and was tarnished by mediocre reviews. The Smurfs, on the other hand, debuted stronger than anticipated. I predicted a $32 million opening, while many in the industry thought it wouldn’t crack $30 million. Sony did a commendable job marketing the $110 million movie to both children unfamiliar with The Smurfs and to adults who grew up with the comics or TV show.

Dumb has reached a whole new level this summer.

When stuff like this happens, it reminds me of the Entourage episode were Ari says that some stars buy millions of dollars worth of tickets just to guarantee that their movie opens number 1.I am an Air Force and single at present .I need a woman who can love me back ..I also uploaded my hot photos on U’niformedM’ate .C óM under the name of flyer212..It’s the largest and best club for seeking Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Police Force, and the admirers of those who wear the uniform.I just hope you don’t mind me being a soldier …Please Check it out!I’m serious.

Or perhaps this is what Hollywood wants us to believe?

  • LAJackie

I don’t understand why The Smurfs cost $110 – remember the days when a budget that high was shocking?!

    • RCB

Probably CGI costs, plus marketing maybe. Nowadays, they tend to market films globally.

    • willa

      Isn’t in 3-D? I think that costs a lot.

  • LOL

    America loves crap.

    • MJ

      Right ON LOL, Right on…

      • Tom

At the very least it put good talented people to use and they got work and paychecks. As for cinematic history and creativity? What do they really care, right?

    • LOL

Fast Five proved that Hollywood can produce a quality film that will also be successful. It’s all about the art of filmmaking man, if it’s not about that, then all you have is shiny crap. I have no time for excuses, America needs to support quality, thought provoking films. They did it once this summer with Fast Five, I have faith they can do it again. They just need the tough love that people like me provide.

      • LOL

Ack. Sorry. So used to the old song and dance. But come on. Fast Five, in all its mediocrity, would be Inception compared to this crapbath. Frankly, you have to be smurfing me.

      • MeME

Your satire here is on point and excellent.

      • Lil Jo

I’m sorry, Fast Five THOUGHT PROVOKING????? I’ll admit I haven’t seen the movie so I won’t say it’s crap, but thought provoking, PLEASE!

  • Jesse

I’m saddened that COWBOYS & ALIENS didn’t do better; it was very entertaining, one of the best of the summer. I think the critics were a bit too hard on it. A movie doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel to entertain.

    • Flip

The problem is it wasn’t anything like the graphic novel it’s based on. They didn’t stay true to the source material.

      • willa

I don’t think a lot of people know the source material or care. It got a 44 on the rotten tomatoes ratings and the trailers didn’t look great.

      • Tom

It makes Howard the Duck looks awesome.

    • Liz Lemon

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions…but NO! It’s SO bad.
The plot is so weak and nothing is explained. Like WTF do the aliens use the humans for?? And why do they want the gold? What is the purpose?
And the aliens look stupid and are not scary at all.

I think that people have a hard time in getting into a movie that is integrated with two the genres of Westerns and Sci Fi. Instead they put there money onto crap like the Smurfs.
Yes, I’m pointing to the people who didn’t see SERENITY in the theaters!

    • willa

Smurfs is a kids movie, kids are easy to please. They usually have at least one adult with them, there’s another ticket. Parents just want to keep the kids entertained for a couple hours, they don’t care if the Smurfs are good.

    • Mary

      SERENITY deserved to flop.

  • Jose

The smurfs made money, that makes me shudder.

    • Tom

They have nothing else to go see. They have already watch Cars 2 five times.

    • Gonna Smurf It

It made me SMURF all over my keyboard.

  • John M.

Some of the Smurf movie’s profits came from gay men, too.

    • Scott

Really John M, that was really insiteful of you. I’m going to go out on a limb and say every movie that comes out has some of its profits come from gay men…..idiot!

      • Gonna Smurf It

It actually was though. Neil Patrick Harris is so HOT right now. SO hot right now, I’d Smurf it Scott, you know I would… he he he… Squuuee… SNORT.

  • deedith

Honestly I was excited when I first saw the Cowboys and Aliens trailer but it was just too heavily promoted imo. Every movie I’ve seen this summer the trailer was always in it beforehand.. I’m glad it’s finally showing so I don’t have to see the commercials anymore..

  • Dumbledore Fluffernutter

Yeah, deedith. It seems like I saw the Cowboys trailer 20 times in the last year. It wasn’t a great trailer anyway. The Movie was OK but easily forgotten.

    • Cheryl

I’m not going to go out of my way to see this film. Maybe on DVD if I am really hard up for something to do.

  • Liz Lemon

Cowboys & Aliens is a terrible movie. Avoid it at all costs.

    • Wickeddoll

C&A shouldn’t be looked at too specifically. It’s turn-off-your-brain entertainment, nothing more. Sometimes you need to escape the real world. At least hubby and I certainly do.
