John Travolta, meet your son. Ben Foster (The Messenger, 3:10 to Yuma) has signed on to play John Gotti, Jr., the son of the infamous New York mafia don, in the indie biopic Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father. (Travolta agreed to play Gotti Sr. earlier this year.) Barry Levinson is directing from a script by him and writer James Toback (Bugsy), with Al Pacino and Kelly Preston also set to star. UPDATE: While Lindsay Lohan has long been associated with the project, a rep for the film tells EW that “producers are still very much in talks with Lindsay’s representatives, but no agreement has been reached as of yet.”

In a statement about Foster’s casting, producer Marc Fiore said, “We have been interested in Ben from the very start, and I cannot begin to express how excited I am to have him in the movie. Ben has proven himself to be one of this generation’s finest actors, he is very serious about this role and there is no question in my mind that he is the perfect actor to bring John Gotti, Jr. to the big screen.” Added Levinson, who cast a fresh-faced Foster in his 1999 film Liberty Heights, “[Ben] is one of the few young actors who can literary transform himself from role to role, from light comedy to a deadly gunslinger in 3:10 to Yuma. I think he can bring something very memorable to the role of Gotti Jr.”

The film is scheduled to begin production on Jan. 3, 2012 in New York.

That’s…interesting. I mean I love Ben Foster, but he looks nothing like the real life John Gotti Jr.

  • Dan

Who here remembers Ben from that show Flashforward?

    • Dan

      ^Not the cancelled ABC show

    • LOL

I remember it. I think it came on Saturday mornings. One of my favorite shows growing up.

Side note, I used to always get him and Ryan Gosling confused with each other.

That show was so good. I think it used to air on the Disney Channel in the 90s.

Yes! I’ve loved him since those early Flash Foward days! For awhile it seemed like he had dropped off the face of the Earth so I’m happy to see he has such a solid career now!

I definitely do. I was just thinking about how goofy he was on that, and how amazing it is that he turned out to be a super solid performer. Loved him in The Messenger.

He also guest starred on Freaks and Geeks as a handicapped teen.

I love this guy, but never remember his name. I liked his work in 3:10 to Yuma and because of his costume, I call him “Fancy Pants”. That is his name to me.

He’s actually a good actor. Now if they get rid of Travolta and confirm that Lindsay Lohan won’t be involved, they just might make a good movie. But probably not.

I can’t stand John Travolta anymore. I would be interested in seeing this movie except for his involvement.

He was also in a silly but cute movie called Get Over It with Kirsten Dunst and Martin Short.

I loved Get Over It! Such a sweet movie. BTW, he was on “Flash Forward” with Jewel Staite also a great talent. My fave role he played was in “Bang Bang You’re Dead. He was also very powerful in a small role in The Laramie Project.

It doesn’t matter what they pay her, what they offer her, the reality is that the best way to kill this so-called script is to have Lohan in it. Why would any studio waste their time employing a drug-addict, alcoholic, thief? Well as far as I am concerned they can get any and all big names on this movie but it is DOA as long as Lohan is associated with it. Period. She is not insurable and they know it, they are foolish to waste their money on this waste of space – called Lohan!

  • Bill

He looks nothing like Gotti Jr. as Al Pacino looks nothing like Aniello Dellacroce as John Travolta looks nothing like John Gotti as Preston looks nothing like John Gotti’s wife.
