Oprah Winfrey, James Earl Jones, and Dick Smith to receive honorary Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that Oprah Winfrey will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at this year’s Governors Awards ceremony, while actor James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith will receive honorary Oscars.

Winfrey, a past Best Supporting Actress nominee for 1985’s The Color Purple, is the first Jean Hersholt award winner since Jerry Lewis in 2008. Jones, meanwhile, has earned one Oscar nomination in his long career, for Best Actor for 1970’s The Great White Hope. And Smith is a past Best Makeup winner for 1984’s Amadeus who also worked on The Godfather and Taxi Driver. The awards will be presented at the Governors Awards ceremony on November 12.

Wait…so you make two movies in your lifetime, one of which (Beloved) was a massive bomb and that earns you an Honorary Oscar? Man, they are reaching this year for an audience.

    • Cygnus

I wonder how much she paid for that.

  • BC666

I’m sorry, Oprah? An honorary Oscar? For what may I ask? Did I miss something? When did Oprah become a Hollywood legend? Kissing ass and flailing all over celebrity guests on her show doesn’t make her a Hollywood legend…..makes her more like a low life PR person.

  • deedeedragons

That’s crap. While i’m glad for James Earl Jones there are so many others that deserve this more than Oprah, off the top of my head:
Christopher Lee, Catherine Deneuve, Donald Sutherland, Maureen O’Hara, Albert Finney, Max Von Sydow. If you don’t know who they are look them up. They’ve done for FILM then Oprah has.

    • Dawn

Really deedee? Deneuve & Von Sydow don’t have an Oscar? Pathetic. Agree all those you mentioned deserve one before her!

      • John

        100% agree.

    • creaner

i think it,s wonderful i will be watching and crying.

  • Gerald H

Please allow me to point out that is clearly states that Oprah Winfrey is receiving a HUMANITARIAN award, not an award for her very limited motion picture endeavors.

    • dee

      Potato, Partarto.

    • creaner

right on and we all know a long time coming.

  • obviously an idiot

ok so Winfrey gets an honorary Oscar while people like Brad Pitt, Peter O Toole, Christopher Nolan, Paul Thomas Anderson, Edward Norton, David Fincher, Jullianne Moore, Ralph Fiennes, Darren Aronofsky, Helena Bonham Carter, Joaquin Phoenix, Johnny Depp, Michael Mann, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christopher Plummer, Tom Cruise, Ridley Scott, Ray Liotta, Annette Benning, Peter Weir, Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, John Malkovich and more have never won? sweet next year academy, u should hand out best actor to Kevin James best actress to Rosie Whitely Huntington best director to the dude who did the smurfs best picture to the Hangover Part II and best original screenplay to that great script for Battle LA! (: I’m jk I know an honorary Oscar isn’t a real movie Oscar but it does make you wonder haha

    • TorontoTom

Why the snub for Fast Five?!?

  • Dan

The award is given for humanitarian efforts not her film career. Oprah has done a ton for charity. Get a grip people!

    • Barry

Yes, she’s done a ton for BLACK charities. She’s a RACIST.

      • creaner

that not make anything but and black women who love people, just as other do .but dont wht ur talking about she does 4 all not just her races hater u know notting really.

    • Cygnus

So maybe the Emmy’s should give her a Humanitarian award since she’s a TV person. 2 movies hardly qualifies her as a movie person deserving any kind of Oscar. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet probably donate much much more to charity than she does. Where’s their Oscar?

  • Canadian

Yeah, these people complain but they obviously can’t read. She’s getting an award for humanitarian work, not film work. And as she was nominated for an Oscar, then the Oscars can give her a humanitarian award if they want to. I don’t think James Earl Jones over some other people is the right choice here.

    • Steve

It is for film stars who have done humanitarian work. It is the Oscars! She is faaaar from a film star. It is sad how far the Academy will go for ratings. This is usually given out the week before the Oscars. I bet they will give her this award the night of. There are so many “FILM” stars who are worthy. Pitt-Jolie-Jessica-Parker. Toby Keith does wonderful work for our service men. He was in some movies. He should not get one however. You know why? He is a music star!!! Not an actor! Oprah is a tv host!! She should be no where near the Oscars.

      • TorontoTom

She is getting the award, along with Jones and Smith in NOVEMBER – read the article!

      • Esox

Opurt is also a movie producer. Don’t rack up her time in Tinseltown to just her two acting appearances.

  • bootsycolumbia

I’m more enraged that James Earl Jones has to settle for an honorary Oscar. The man is a gifted actor who only was nominated once. It’s like when Peter O’Toole won the honorary Oscar a few years ago. It was for his “body of work”, rather than for an individual film, which I thought was lame. Oprah, on the other hand, isn’t getting an acting Oscar, but one for her humanitarian work. I don’t have a problem with that; she deserves it.

  • Jim

So you appear in one decent film, make a second one that’s a piece of crap…and go on TV to bring rampant narcissim to a NEW level….and you GET an Oscar??? I. Don’t. Think. So.

  • Margo

Do people actually read articles anymore or just the headlines?

  • It’s leviOsa, not levioSA

I read the article & i still don’t think Oprah deserves it. What about Mia Farrow for example?

    • creaner

im sure she is great to but for it,s about oprah please they choose her.

  • Brian

I really disagree with Oprah Winfrey receiving that kind of special Oscar because I think it’s absurd, I mean how many movies did she appear in aside from The Color Purple, a few that is not fair because other actors or actresses should really be getting that honor that haven’t got their due.

  • John

I’m surprised no one in the media is pointing this out, but Jones has “technically” scored an EGOT here-he already had a Tony, Grammy, and Emmy.

    • BobSF

EGOT – if true, that is awesome. I wonder if Tina Fey has a replica bling chain made for him….

  • Mike haight

One movie roll and you qualify for Oscar? Giving this award to oprah is a huge joke

    • Mike hate

      role

  • Mike

The award may be for humanitarian reasons but should go to someone with a body of work in film. Oprah doesn’t qualify

    • Liz Lemon

I thought she was brilliant in The Color Purple.
