Sony schedules 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' for May 2014

Though audiences still have to wait until next July 3 for The Amazing Spider-Man to hit theaters, Sony is clearly very bullish on its reboot of the web-slinging franchise — so much so that they’ve already greenlit a sequel and staked out a release date of May 2, 2014 for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. “It speaks volumes about our confidence in what we are seeing on the new film and our desire to move quickly on the next installment,” says a studio source. No further information is available on the sequel at this point, though it seems safe to assume that the new Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield, will be back wearing the suit again. But hey, it’s never too early for fanboys to start lobbying for their favorite villains, so have at it: Who would you like to see Spider-Man square off against in the franchise’s next chapter?

to this day i still don’t see a need for a reboot, sam raimi was a great director and tobey was awesome as spidey, huge fan of spiderman and those movies they did…however im willing to give this one a shot, i just want spiderman to be back in movie theaters lol, in a way im kind of excited…

Pretty much I agree with you – though Spider-Man 3 was pretty bizarre, I would have kept coming, b/c the first 2 were so good. But the casting and tone for this upcoming Spidey flick look so promising, I can’t wait to see it.
Villain? Have Kingpin or someone kinda cool in the second movie, but introduce Eddie Brock, and then have Venom in the third! Brock needs to be established in more than one movie, to give venom the weight he deserves.

What the studio source really means is we have great confidence idiots will pay up to see a reboot a few years after the original trilogy. The odds are good they will reboot it again after the second trilogy, the same for Iron Man

    • AK

I doubt this movie will do anywhere near as well as the original Raimi/Maguire version.

    The Vulture!

    • Brad H

      I agree… Vulture!!!

  • ed

Straight to DVD sequel more like it.

  • Gerry

    A sequel in 2014?

Shouldn’t they be rebooting it by then again?

    • Michael Sacal

      That’s DC Comics’ shtick.

I don’t get it, was there also this much hate when they rebooted Batman a few years after the last one? Or now that they’re rebooting Superman? Or is it only for Spidey?

      • Todd

When there’s no reason for a reboot other than a cash grab, then it deserves all the hate it gets.

Do we really need to see the same thing over and over again every 9 years?

This is cynical, audiences-will-pay-for-anything Hollywood executive thinking.

They rebooted Batman nearly a decade after it’s previous installment, the original series had legitimately petered out, also the original had not followed a plotline or had consistency in it’s cast or crew, having 2 directors and 3 Batmans over just 4 movies. Rebooting really made sense in everyway.
Spiderman on the other hand had the same cast and director for 3 movies that followed a solid sotryline and yet is being rebooted only 5 years after the last installment. Whilst Spider-Man 3 was a dissapointment compared to the first two it was far from a disaster and the series was definately recoverable.

Meh. Wake me up when they make it about the black Spider-Man.

  • poop

I remember two years ago when they said they would make a sequel to Star Trek a week before the film came out. And everyone thought it was ridiculous. Now this a year before. Wow.

  • Abe Froman

Sandman, but do it RIGHT this time.

    • Jackie

Ha ha, I actually thought Sandman was the only good thing about ‘Spiderman 3’!

    • BG 17

Except for the part where Sandman was involved in Uncle Ben’s death. I never understood why every villain in Raimi’s Spider-flicks had to be related to Peter in some way before becoming a villain…

  • Michael

I would like to see Chameleon and Hydro-Man

  • Matt

    Go dark,,Kraven the Hunter

  • Irf

    Tbe trailer sucks.

  • Lucas

Agreed about Eddie Brock. I wanna see Mysterio/ Kraven/Proto-Goblin

    • PhantomX

Proto-Goblin is already gonna be in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ next year.

  • Scruffy Nerfherder

Sounds like they’re putting the cart before the horse , but maybe that’s why they have the Lizard as the villain in the first movie and someone also cast as the Proto-Goblin (whatever that is) . Still no one on the imdb site cast as J.Jonah Jameson , perhaps he’ll appear in the second movie . But it ain’t Spiderman without old Jolly Jonah Jameson !

  • weaponX

    @ Matt
great idea, Kravern the hunter would be awsome

  • Andrew

    Go really dark with Carnage

    • Michael

Carnage would be awesome, but I’d also LOVE to see Mysterio on film!!!

      • Tahir

They should really do carnage and venom and how much they mentally tortured spiderman, even thoughi believe the actor for this spiderman would not play the dark role well

    • PhantomX

Venom should be in a ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3′ and then Carnage in part 4.

  • Ruining The Classics

Proof positive that Sony is less concerned about quality and forced Raimi out (after forcing the inferior S-3 script on him) only to do it cheaper to chase after big bucks throwing quality out the window ! They should call it Sonyman The Chase For Big Profits .

    • Juan

Yeah. I think they’re set the date early so that the rights wouldn’t go to Marvel. Cause maybe Disney could have bought it back if this movie did great. And that could still happen but it seems less likely now. Which is a shame cause it wont be part of the cinematic universe of marvel. But as long as its a proper spider man movie that does justice to spider man, then I’m happy! The other movies weren’t bad, but they weren’t completely spider-man. Hopefully they get it completely right this time.
