The Great Gatsby is occasionally described as the Great American Novel, but filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is certainly doing his best to give his 2012 adaptation a serious injection of Australiana. The film is shooting in Sydney and has already cast two Aussie leads — Joel Edgerton will play Tom Buchanan, a.k.a. the Great American Douchebag, while Isla Fisher will play Tom’s mistress Myrtle. Now, EW has confirmed that Australian model Gemma Ward has been cast in the film in an undisclosed role. Ward, who famously “retired” from modeling at age 21, is probably best known to American audiences as Tamara, the freaky mermaid queen from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (which is a movie that made $1 billion dollars).

I was excited about this movie until I found out it was going to be in 3D. I would have also preferred in be shot in the US considering it is a classic piece of American literature.

The original movie starring Robert Redford was a box office bomb even though it was well done. Can’t imagine them taking another chance on this rather dated story.

I do wonder what role she’ll play. So far, the casting sounds interesting and qualified. Can you imagine, Flake Lively was considered (for a second, though) to be Daisy Buchanan? Don’t laugh, I’m serious. I can not wait to hear Carey’s Americanish accent. Love her.
