Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy’s epic romance novel, is about to get a Hollywood makeover. Focus Features announced today that Joe Wright, the director of Pride & Prejudice, Hanna and Atonement, will team up with Keira Knightley for a third time when she steps into Anna’s classic shoes for an adaptation penned by renown playwright Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love) and produced by Working Title Films. Jude Law will play Anna’s husband, Aleksei Karenin, and Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) will play her young lover, Count Vronsky. Kelly Macdonald, Emily Watson, and Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) will also star alongside other Wright favorites, Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice) and Olivia Williams (Hanna).

The story takes place in late 19th century Russia, and explores various relationships between members of Russian high-society. “Joe Wright is a master filmmaker, and with Tom Stoppard’s brilliant screenplay this Anna Karenina will be full of both pageantry and emotion,” Focus Features CEO James Schamus said in a release. Fans of Knightley’s iconic green dress from Atonement will be happy to know that the film’s costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, has signed on as well.

Karenina will commence filming in the U.K. and Russia this month. Focus Features will distribute the movie domestically, and Universal Pictures International internationally, in the second half of 2012.

I’m so there! Atonement and Pride and Prejudice were amazing films and I would do just about anything for the green dress. It was so beautiful.

Me too! loveloveloved both P&P and Atonement. And please purists, hardly ever is an actress the exact age of the character she’s playing. Vivien Leigh certainly wasn’t 16 in GWTW. Rumor is Wright is courting James McAvoy for Levin which would just about make this cast perfection!

Noooooo! She can’t play Anna! Not unless she’s willing to gain at least 15 kilos. And Aaron Johnson is way too young and ineffectual to play Vronsky! And I bet they all but delete Kitty and Levin’s storyline. This has killing my favourite book written all over it.

She is TOO YOUNG to play Anna!

And He’s WAY too young to play vronsky!

Not a big enough age difference between Law and Knightly. The Count is 20+ years older than Anna.

NO! Can’t Hollywood stop screwing with the classics? And especially the dreary and morbid classics. If you are depressed when you enter the theater, you will be suicidal when you emerge. Big mistake.

What’s next? How about The Brothers Karamazov ? Or War & Peace? Did Hollywood learn nothing from the big studios during the Great Depression? With the economy in the toilet we need happy movies not this depressing crap.

    • huh??

You had me at Keira Knightley and Joe Wright. Jude Law is an added bonus.

I heard Saoirse Ronan will also be in this, which is worth noting since it will be her third time working with Joe Wright as well.

Both are great actors. I realize I should without judgement before seeing this version.
My fave is the 30s Greta Garbo one. And no I don’t personally remember it. I watched it on Turner Classic Movies a couple years ago. It was so grand and beautifully romantic.
