Sylvester Stallone talks about who's on board for 'Expendables 2' -- EXCLUSIVE

When The Expendables hit theaters last summer, it seemed like virtually every action star of a certain age dropped by to flex their biceps and kick some keister. But apparently writer-director-star Sylvester Stallone still thinks there’s room for more macho men in the upcoming sequel. In a recent interview with EW, Stallone said that not only would Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger have meatier parts the second go-round, but that he’s also added Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme to the mix and, fingers crossed, we may even see Nicolas Cage and John Travolta getting in on the mayhem, too.

Prior to the first Expendables, we reported that Stallone had been rebuffed by Van Damme when he offered him a part in the all-star cast, which included Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, and a who’s who of other hulking he-men. But now the Muscles From Brussels is saddling up. “We’ll have a big showdown between me and Van Damme, which has been anticipated for a long time, so it should be a good one,” says Stallone, who heads to Bulgaria at the end of this month to start shooting. The movie is aiming for an Aug. 2012 release.

This time out, Stallone is only working in front of the camera. Directing duties will be handled by Con Air‘s Simon West. Which, come to think of it, may have had something do with luring another new Expendable: Nic Cage. “We’ve got Chuck Norris and I think Nic Cage,” says Stallone. “We’re trying to work out different scenarios. I like using people that had a moment and then maybe have fallen on some hard times and give them another shot. So we’re always looking for actors like Michael Biehn and Michael Pare. I like those kinds of guys. Someone did it for me and I like to see if I can do it for them. We also need some new blood in there, a Navy Seal-type, because with the Expendables none of them have 20-20 vision anymore. They need some help, man.”

As for reports that Travolta may also join the expandable Expendables cast, Stallone says, “It’s possible. The one thing I’ve learned is what is a fact on Monday is a complete fallacy on Tuesday. A lot of it is scheduling. It’s not financial. It’s just that Bulgaria is definitely a jaunt. It’s a commitment, you know what I mean? Especially in the dead of winter.”

Bulgaria, dead of winter, huh? I wonder what the plot will be this time, not that it matters all that much. Looks like JCVD will be a villain, but I wonder who the main villain will be? Maybe this one will be better since Stallone isn’t spreading himself so thin. Good or bad, I’ll probably see it opening week.

      • America

You are right – we do love crap – hell we worship crap. If by some CRAZY fluke Sly gets Vin Diesel and The Rock to be in this, would you consider loving crap just this once?? xoxo @LOL

      • Zombie Jesus

Judging by the poop that constantly comes out of your mouth I’d say you’re the go-to guy on everything crap. Now we just have to wait for you to mention Fast Five and wrap this up.

      • LOL

I say we all start using the name LOL for a day. I’ll start. America loves 80’s action stars! Yes they do and they realize how awesome this movie is going to be. Come 2012 Expendables 2 will be the biggest box office hit since Avatar! America LOVES QUALITY!

      • Jeff hates LOL

Go watch fast five and shut up you idiot! You are no more than a hairy trolls nut sack!

  • harry

    I can’t wait!!!

  • Tranzchick

YES. Please, please get Michael Biehn as a Navy SEAL type guy. He’s played one three times that I can remember and he was awesome everytime. (Can you tell I’m an ’80’s child?)

    • ian

He’s much better as a Colonial Marine.

      • Tranzchick

Pretty decent time traveler and gunslinger too.

    • sunsetsnow81

I almost fainted when I read about possibly casting Biehn. Yes, please!

    • Johnny

I’m an 80’s child & a big Michael Biehn fan too. Ever since I seen him in terminator. I’m already hyped about the sequel but to possibly have Kyle Reese & maybe Eddie Wilson (if your a true 80’s baby you who that is!) in it?! Man I can’t wait! Even if they’re not in it, it’s gonna be a good movie!

    • Lyndsey

Biehn has actually been honored by the SEALs for his portrayal of SEALs in the movies! He’s just such an iconic action figure from the 80’s & 90’s that I can’t imagine a better casting choice. Can’t wait!!

  • Jay

OK, so… Jean Claude Van Damme is to be in it. If it is in 3-D, how far out of the screen will that huge knot on his head stick out?

    • Jenn

      Brutal humor fail.

    • LOL

      LMAO good one…

  • redvector

If they can’t get Nic Cage or Travolta why not Stallone’s former Tango and Cash co-star Kurt Russell?

    • pastafarian

Kurt Russell needs to be in this, absolutely. Talk about “using people that had a moment and then maybe have fallen on some hard times and give them another shot”. He never quite rose above a second tier action star, despite a few cult gems like Escape From New York and BigTrouble in Little China.

  • Stacie

    This just makes me happy!

  • kevin

Van Damme and Lundgren could duke it out again just like they did in UNIVERSAL SOLDIER back in ’92.

    • Hey Kevin

You do know that they are making another Universal Soldier movie and that it’ll have JCVD and Dolph in it? Oh and it’ll be in 3D. I’m not joking..

  • eMs

Looking for actors like Michael Biehn or Michael Pare? Then hire those two please. Luv’d Pare in Streets of Fire and Eddie and the Cruisers (part 2 doesn’t exist in my mind, leave it at that) and Biehn is just awesome in any role he has ever been in.

    • Tranzchick

You are right on the money. With everything you just said.

    • Zturk

  • Daiana

Awesome! BUT… What about including Steven Seagal?!

    • Danny

Seagal was offered a part in the first movie because of personal issues with producer Avi Lerner. Avi is producing part 2 as well, and Seagal refuses to work with him, so Seagal not gonna happen.

  • Spider

Awesome news! I’d say add MICHAEL DUDIKOFF to this badass cast!

    • Jeff hates LOL

oh Good call spider Has he been anything lately? He was great in the old American Ninja movies!

  • liz

But they’re going to keep the old cast, right?

    • Ash

I certainly hope so. I love me some Dolph Lundgren. I know this movie is going to be a hit. There are so many people who love one or more of these guys, who grew up watching them in the 80’s and 90’s. Heck I saw the first Expendables in the theatre twice because it was just so much fun. Can’t wait for the sequel!

  • Sokol

Uhhh what about Keifer Sutherland? Need some good ole Jack Bauer action!

    • Voodoo

Sutherland wasn’t an action star in the 80s/90s, so who cares.

      • joey j

Actually, Sutherland’s peak was in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Flat liners, the lost boys, stand by me, young guns, a few good men, the vanishing, the cowboy way, three musketeers, a time to kill.. all between 1986 and 1996

      • joey j

point being was young guns 1 and 2, and 3 musketeers were action movies as well

      • Helllooooo Nurse!

Now, now The 3 Musketeers is only good because of Tim Curry.

      • Voodoo

@joey j, that still doesn’t make him an action star.

    • LOL

  • dmac2498

Sly you have my money IN ADVANCE!!!! Can’t wait for the next go around of the Expendables!!!!

  • jason

love Sly….cant wait for this…i think it will be alot better than first…and i actually liked the first

  • bird

The first one was so bad it was good. Can’t wait for the sequel.
