Kevin Bacon's never-before-seen audition for 'Footloose' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

With a reboot of 1984’s Footloose hitting theaters next month, it feels like the perfect time to take a stroll down memory lane back to when Kevin Bacon couldn’t get arrested in Hollywood. Sure, the baby-faced twentysomething actor had already had a bit part as the evil preppy Chip Diller in Animal House, and been shish-kebabed through the neck in Friday the 13th. But Paramount was far from sold on him as Footloose‘s rug-cutting rebel Ren McCormack. According to Bacon, they didn’t think he was sexy enough. But the film’s director, Herb Ross, thought otherwise. So he got Bacon a $1,500 haircut and set up a screen test for him to strut his stuff for the studio in the hopes of changing their mind.

Until now, we’ve always had to take it on faith that Bacon gave an electrifying audition that won him the part. But thanks to the new Blu-ray release of Footloose (available on Sept. 27), we finally have the first-hand proof: Bacon’s audition is included on the disc’s extras. And if you don’t feel like waiting, you can see a snippet of it exclusively here:

“When I look at this kid it’s almost hard for me to believe it’s me,” Bacon says in an extensive new interview that accompanies the screen test. It’s easy to see what he means. The actor is so young and brash that it’s hard to take your eyes off of him. But in case you can, you’ll notice that his partner isn’t Lori Singer (who hadn’t been cast yet), but Haviland Morris — better known as Jake Ryan’s girlfriend from Sixteen Candles.

Elsewhere on the Footloose Blu-ray’s extras, Sarah Jessica Parker drops by for a new interview to talk about her role as Singer’s feisty sidekick, Rusty, and to reminisce about the late Chris Penn, who played the dancephobic hick Willard, and who she confesses was “the first love of my life.” Who knew?

As for Bacon, he still seems proud of the film that made him a star. “People think of it as this kind of fluffy, pop thing,” he says. “But if you really go back and look at it…the movie is an edgier movie than I think people remember.”

I agree with BAcon, it is a lot edgier then some people give it credit for.

I’m still ticked they are rebooting this.

    • Reboots never work

Bacon is a fantastic actor. Remakes have no business being made unless the original was poorly done. The only time I can think of a good remake was A Star Is Born with Judy Garland

Good for Kevin for remembering how he got where he is! And he proved that’s he wasn’t some pretty boy who was just a flash in the pan.

  • Ellah

Jon Bon Jovi was originally cast to be Ren.

  • Joy McBride

I loved the original Footloose, but the new one looks so much more exciting and the stars are both better looking than Kevin and Lori. People need to give it a chance, I would be will to bet they will love it too.

    • elaine benes

      Sorry, are you drunk?

    • Jackie

Right, and I’m sure the planned re-make of ‘Dirty Dancing’ will be even better than the original too! (Heavy on the sarcasm there.)

…because looks are all that matters anymore, right? It’s no wonder the economy is about to tank, the world is on the brink of war, and 90% of the people on the planet are living like they’re the only ones alive. But you go on and enjoy your shiny little ball…

    • spookiewon

You’re joking, right? Better looking than Kevin Bacon? NOT.

  • Brett Ming

    joy,are you twelve?

The remake of Footloose should never have happened, the original is just as good today as it was then. I watched the trailer for the remake and it looked truly horrendous, on a brighter note it reminded me how lucky we were with the original cast, all so perfectly cast. It is incredibly depressing how the lack of originality and imagination in Hollywood today is resulting in pointless and unasked for remakes. Just don’t get me started on the rumoured remakes of Dirty Dancing and The Crow!

If people stopping paying for these senseless remakes, they’d stop making them… Unfortunately it looks like this new one will be #1 @ the box office so except more of the same

Kevin Bacon was 26 in 1984 when he made Footloose. He looked way too old to be playing a teenager in high school.

    • Jo

True, and most of the cast in Grease were in their 30’s when they were making THAT teenage movie too. Your point? Either way you look at it, the older version of Footloose is far better than the newer one, as always they had to change some of the plot to because they probably figured if they went by the original fully they would fail with flying colors! Truth be told, it would!

  • Soapstef

Haviland Morris was pretty good here herself! I guess Lori got it because she looked more cracked out and insane.

So is it true that Chaz Bono who was passed over for Kevin Bacon’s role in Footloose will be cast in Pat Swayze’s Dirty Dancing role? Right now he’s the most famous male dancer before the public.

    • kevin spencer

Come on, Swayze’s role requires a REAL man.

    • spookiewon

Really, I love and support Chaz, but he’s entirely wrong for either role.

It’s quite inexplicable isn’t it. If they have any sense I have the felnieg that they will have reset it by the weekend. At least set this as the default and give users the option of re-enabling the old style replies via their settings. Maybe a bit of Bernie Ecclestone style smoke and mirrors stuff is going on do something that causes a rumpus and creates lots of press and then suddenly change your mind and start saying the exact opposite a week later
