“What did they see?”
This is the tagline for Daniel Radcliffe’s eerie ghost story The Woman in Black, and when you check out the exclusive, animated poster below, you’ll get some idea of why the Harry Potter actor looks so unnerved in the photo to the left.
Think of it as an early Halloween treat from CBS Films.
Radcliffe stars in The Woman in Black as a young lawyer in the early 1900s who visits an isolated northern England village to resolve the estate of an old woman. Once there, he encounters fearful, secretive locals, as well as bizarre visions of a menacing female figure draped in black. A family photograph in the wrecked home has the eyes deliberately scratched out, and as Radcliffe’s character explores the village’s secrets, he learns that children there routinely die under mysterious circumstances.
It’s based on a novel by Susan Hill that was also turned into a hit London stage show.
At first glance, this poster image seems to have suffered not only the scratches over the eyes, but a bit of water damage as well. Move your cursor over it, however, and something else emerges…

The children in the poster remind me of an old 1960 film called Village of the Damned [not the remake]. It has a vintage creepiness about it. Can’t wait.
Cool poster. Too bad the chilidish desperate EW writer is more concerned about his pathetic headline claim that this is supposed to be some kind of EXCLUSIVE.
That’s not creepy. That is called Lazy
This would be a far better poster if the children were dressed in period costume. The movie is set in the early 1900′s, according to the blurb, but these kids are from the 50′s or 60′s.
I watched the new trailer yesterday and it gave me chills. I worry about the quality of the movie because a) it’s not being released during October, the “natural” time for a scary movie and b) it’s being released in February, where bad movies go to die.
Nope. Bad movies go to die in January, April and September. Not all good horrors get dumped in October in fear they’ll be overshadowed by the Paranormal Activities and Saws. But the real horror to check out is THE AWAKENING
Yes, the novella is really terrifying.
Scream 4 opened in April and it was awesome, the best movie I’ve seen so far in Twenty11.
Really? Wow…without words.
Eff you, “Oh geez”. If you can’t see that it was good, end your life.
What was the other movie you saw this year?
Did you even see any other movies this year? I am not saying Scream 4 was bad, but the best? Hardly.
It’s not even about his moronic comment about the quality of Scream 4.
Look how Flip the loser wrote 2011 in his comment. What a desperate and pathetic t@rd.
god this look like another dog of a movie ugh
Seriously, Flip? You need to get out more often. Scream 4 was eleven years too late and just plain bad.
Scream4 was the best movie you have seen in 2011? Really? You do not get out much…
I’m not sure about that. Silence of the Lambs was released in February. Could be a counter programming move against Valentine’s Day (or a scary date movie for Valentine’s Day?)
Silence of the Lambs opened in February and it was pretty good. I have hopes for this one.
“Pretty good?” SOTL is one of the best films ever made (pardon my Kanye) and won the top five Oscars.
“pardon my Kanye” – lol
omg hes so hot lol
If I focus on Daniel Radcliffe’s hotness, the chills from the poster start to go away. Thanks, Daniel!
Daniel hot? In what universe? In the sense that Leonard Hofstadter is hot? He couldn’t get lucky in a woman’s prison with a handful of pardons.
abadstroller should just be call troll for short. Or shot in the leg.
I think he’s hot. Very much so in this film….
I think he’s hot too – especially recently.
I think I’m going to hurl.
This is true. I’m a chicken, but I’ll see this movie for Dan.
I think I just vomited in my mouth
Anything like this with children is terrifying.
Read Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
that’s exactly what i thought if when i saw the poster! the photos in that book are so good…though i generally agree, kids up the scare factor by about ten.
The play scared the bejeezus out of me, and I hope the movie follows suit. This and The Awakening look really good.
The book was amazing. I hope they don’t change the ending (but knowing Hollywood, they will).
It’s not a Hollywood movie… part of the reason it’s not opening in time for Halloween. It’s a purely British film made by Hammer Studios.
Doesn’t matter. It has a Hollywood star and is being released across America. It’s a Hollywood movie and will have a toned-down, different ending.
Dan has literally never starred in a Hollywood film. Strictly British and Australian. He’s only even been to LA a couple of times, let alone earned the title of “Hollywood star”/
Flip will you just end your life already???
No thanks! I’m havin’ too much fun!
No Offense, but just because Daniel Radcliffe ( I don’t want to say Hollywood Star, he isn’t seeing himself as one and I like it more to say Daniels Name) is in it, doesn’t mean it’s a Hollywood Movie. Maybe you want it to be one, but I don’t know why you care so much about it
“but I don’t know why you care so much about it” Didn’t you read my first post? I loved the book. Did you fail reading comprehension?
Freaking amazing poster !!!! can´t wait for this movie Thank you EW
It’s amazing how certain images become synonymous with “scary/creepy,” and they get so relentlessly used bym well, everyone, that they soon lose their power. Old, sepia-toned pics of people or children from the 1800s are not creepy or scary, especially after being used in every friggin horror film, TV show, ad, book imaginable.
Speak for yourself, man. That poster gives me the freaking chills.
The Book is brilliant (I really hope they don’t change the ending) But i have faith in the revamped Hammer Horror (who are also producing) to stay true to it’s history. Fingers crossed this looks like a very good return to gothic horror, something we haven’t seen in a while.
Okay, I’m officially creeped-out! And that was even before moving the damn cursor like they wanted! Chills, why won’t you go away?!
Creepy Cool! Maybe Radcliffe will win another ‘Scream Award’ ha!
The face in the poster looks like a monkey…
That’s racist.
Maybe it’ll be as good as ‘The Others’
Oh man. The Others is so freaking good. I really hope it’s that good.
I’m am so there. The trailers are so Gothic creepy ya almost want to slap on some black eyeliner and lipstick. Radcliffe has really matured into a fine actor, too. Between this and the VERY disturbing trailer for THE DEVIL INSIDE it looks like January 2012 will be more Halloween than New Year’s!
I can’t stop moving my cursor over, even tho it keeps freaking me out!
