'Jurassic Park' on Blu-ray: Steven Spielberg and the art of screaming in terror -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Can Jurassic Park really be 18 years old? I still remember the giddy anticipation of camping out on line in front of New York’s Ziegfeld Theatre on opening night, June 11, 1993, as if it were yesterday. Those happy memories came roaring back when I received the new Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy on Blu-ray in the mail last week. The three chapters in the dino saga all look great in high-def (even the unfairly maligned¬†Jurassic Park III). But the real selling point is the set’s slew of extras, including a new six-part documentary which does justice to Stan Winston’s awesome animatronics and ILM’s still-dazzling f/x. Of course, the ticked-off velociraptors and dilophosauruses are only part of what makes the franchise so much fun. The humans do a pretty decent job, too.

In this exclusive clip from the extras, Steven Spielberg demonstrates once again why he’s so good at pulling credible performances out of kids, directing Ariana Richards on how to unleash an appropriately blood-curdling scream for the scene when she and her little brother (Joseph Mazzello) are trapped in one of the theme park’s stalled cars when the ginormous T. Rex swings by for a visit. Meanwhile, the now-grown-up Richards pops by to talk about making the movie. (Is it me, or did she grow into a doppelganger of her Jurassic Park costar Laura Dern?).

Also on hand for the vocal chord-shredding yelps was a special visitor to the set that day — King Kong star Fay Wray, the original Scream Queen — who seems delighted when Spielberg tells her, “We’re going to dedicate this scream to you because you did the first good scream ever in the history of movies.” That Spielberg, he’s a charmer. Watch the clip below.

The Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy comes out on Oct. 25.

I can’t belive I would admit to something like this, but they should totally re-release Jurassic Park in 3-D.

    • jpratm

THAT WOULD BE WORTH IT !!!!

    • Mimi

I agree! I typically hate 3D but I would see Jurassic Park 3D in a heartbeat!

  • Joe

Wow, little Ariana Richards has really blossomed, hasn’t she?

  • Jeff

Caught the original on TV the other day. Can’t believe I forgot what an incredible fun ride that movie is.

    • Well…

Jurassic Park isn’t crap. Your comments are.

        Well loves crap.

May I suggest, “The United states enjoys fecal matter’? Just to shake it up a bit. That being said, Jurassic Park does not qualify for that accusation.

Jurassic Paek is the second best summer flick of my childhood (Terminator 2 being the first). The best home theater system with the clearest picture can never duplicate the experience of me seeing it on the big screen the day before my thirteenth birthday. Almost immediatly after, ALL my attention has been on girls.

Damn right we Americans love crap, were what one would say toilet paper is to crap. We go well together.

Looks like you only know three or four words. Let’s get you a new phrase…”I am a turd.”

    • The Joker

If people loved crap, they wouldn’t hate you. 12 year-olds like you probably will never learn what a truly good movie is anyway.

  • Irf

Jesus, I just love that movie. JP forever. One of the best experiences in my life.

  • Ed

I’ll always remember what fun it was to see JP when it came out, my girlfriend screaming when the dinos chased the people.

Theres a REAL blockbuster. My favorite movie has a kid saw it over 100 times in theaters.

  • Jasonhomey

Welcome to Jurassic Park. I love this movie and I am sure my kids will too when they are old enough to watch it. Good fun, scary, exciting. What more could you want in a movie.

Okay, this is what’s going to make me break down buy a Blu-Ray player.
I had no idea they had Fay Wray on set. I would have died (big fan). Also Ariana’s gorgeous. I wish she would have continued with acting.

  • Kiki

I’m really glad they’re putting the sequels on blu-ray, too. I know a lot of people disliked them but I loved Jurassic Park 3. The scene in the bird cage is still one of my favorites in the trilogy.

  • Jerry

It’s my favorite film of all time. I still remember my heart nearly exploding during this scene (the T-rex attacking the kids in the jeep). This film is so thrilling and amazing; it changed my life forever!

    • jpratm

      DITTO !!!!

  • rodkeys

OMG! Fray Wray! I was wondering if they would ever show this footage some day.
I hope they filmed the Ray Harryhausen reaction while visiting ILM and seeing the first CG tests of the film. I’m looking forward to see it on this blu-ray as well!

The great Jeff Goldblum: Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.

  • Darrin

You think JP 3 was “unfairly maligned?” That script was horrible. Every scene with only the human characters was like some lame after school special about broken families. Oh, and here’s something to ponder – JP3 took place on the same island as JP2, but somehow featured a dino even huger and meaner than a T-Rex. If this creature existed there, wouldn’t someone have noticed it or mentioned it at some point during JP2? Still, the Blu-Ray set sounds awesome, can’t wait to get it.
