In another canny move to whet the appetites of Suzanne Collins’ rabid fans, Lionsgate will release a series of posters featuring the major characters from their feverishly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games on Friday. Until then, EW has the exclusive first look at Elizabeth Banks in all the garish splendor of Effie Trinket. (See it after the jump!) Pink wig, possibly askew? Check! A feverish glint in Banks’ eye betraying Effie’s otherwise officious manner. Check!
For the uninitiated, Effie is series heroine Katniss Everdeen and her District 12 counterpart Peeta Mellark’s tinny and willfully oblivious handler as they navigate the reaping and Capitol. “Happy Hunger Games!” she cries out happily to the crowd of terrified children awaiting to hear who gets sent off to fight for their lives in the Arena. “And may the odds be ever in your favor!” She’s a wonderful comic turn of a role, with great layers of menace and vulnerability. And as thrilling as it is to see this first glimpse of Effie come to life, and as much as I’ve always been a fan of Banks’ enormous comedic chops, I feel like I need to hear Banks’ voice in character. It’s Effie’s boiling-over-with-enthusiasm trilling that grates so on Katniss and Peeta as they prepare for battle. She is like your most high-strung, possibly dangerous, occasionally endearing relative at intense family gatherings. She needs everything to go just perfect or she could very well snap. Hey wait, that last part makes her sound like us Hunger Games fans as we fuss and squeal over every new scrap of movie news.

Other than the Effie poster, the other just look like the actors with nothing special involved.
That’s because none of the other characters really look outlandish like the people in the capitol.

Seriously? You can’t give us a full frontal head shot of Effie? And where’s her pink hair?
Actually, I’m more concerned with the wrinkle around her mouth. Nothing wrong with it in real life, but it should have been airbrushed out as people from the Capitol would never have lines on their face. Or anywhere else for that matter.

AB-no, she isn’t being shallow, she’s being truthful-not sure if you’ve read the books, but everyone in the Capitol is nipped, tucked, dyed and dressed to the point of not even looking human anymore.
Well Effie’s not that high on the totem pole, which is why she’s stuck escorting District 12. Maybe she can’t afford as much of the cosmetic alterations on her current pay, especially considering she wears wigs while there are other citizens that have full body dyes and such.

Seen all the posters and the majority of them are right on. But for the capital peeps, I wanted to see more of their faces and their distinct qualities. Sigh.

She and her husband had their first child via a surrogate earlier this year. You would think that she would probably have wanted to take time off but she ran back to work and gave up quality time with her baby for this movie.

Not to be a jerk but since when is Effie Trinket a major character? She’s plot device not a character.
I’m sure her role is a bit bigger in the movie.
Also, the posters for Peeta and Cato are practically identical except for the hair.

Effie was in all three books. If you’re going to nitpick about someone who’s not a “major” character getting a poster, start with Cato.

I pictured Haymitch a bit more rugged (being a complete drunk!), but I guess they are all dressed to the “nines” in the posters. He looks great!

Agreed. I was expecting his to be a little less well kept and to look a little older. Maybe it’s just in profile that he looks too young. He is supposed to be in his 40′s, an alcoholic, living in an impovershed nation. Thos things ago you considerably. Some of these casting choices are spot on and others are terrible! I think Peeta is not a thing like what I imagined him, nor are Gale and Rue. Katniss is what I pictured though and Cinna is perfect too.
Yeah, I didn’t expect the hair on Haymitch. I think I expected it to just look like a drunk, nearly-bald Woody Harrelson.
