In the early 2000s, Sacha Baron Cohen created three characters for his essential comedy series, Da Ali G Show: a wannabe gangster named Ali G, an accidentally inappropriate Kazakh named Borat, and a magnificently gay Austrian named Brüno. All three of them became quote mines for a generation of inappro-comedy fans. And they all got to star in their own film, which ranged from horrible (Ali G Indahouse) to masterful (Borat) to not-as-good-as-Borat (Brüno.)
Lately, Cohen has been gilding his resume with memorable parts in auteurist films (Hugo, next year’s Django Unchained), but he’s also been preparing to unleash a new gleefully offensive character on the world’s population: A totalitarian despot apparently based on Saddam Hussein.
