Audiences have been admiring Colleen Atwood’s costumes for decades — from Johnny Depp’s forlorn, goth barber in 1990’s Edward Scissorhands all the way up to Depp’s unhinged Mad Hatter in 2010’s Alice in Wonderland. But it’s another thing altogether to get an up-close-and-personal look at her work, which I did a few weeks ago at a special private gallery showing of Atwood’s costumes for Snow White and the Huntsman. Beyond all the precise detail work built into every one of Charlize Theron’s outlandishly sinister dresses as the Evil Queen, what most impressed me was how each costume played an integral role in the storytelling of the film. (It’s no wonder Atwood’s won three Oscars for her costume designs, and earned six more nominations besides.)
