'Cloud Atlas' trailer starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Tom Hanks and Halle Berry -- VIDEO

Cloud Atlas (out Oct. 26) is certainly one of the most ambitious films of this fall: an epic, genre-spanning amalgam of the six interlocking stories in David Mitchell’s 2004 novel, adapted for the screen and co-directed by the trio of Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix) and Tom Tywker (Run Lola Run). So it seems only appropriate that the movie’s trailer, which went up today on Apple’s trailer site, is equally grand.

Each of the book’s six stories is represented, including the tales of an investigative journalist (Halle Berry) hounding an energy company, a Hawaiian tribesman (Tom Hanks) befriending a representative of a futuristic society (Berry again), and a young British composer (Ben Whishaw) living with his mentor (Jim Broadbent). But the overall effect is that the stories blend into a continuous narrative, with each actor playing multiple roles to underline the theme of connectivity. The clip is over six minutes long and has no shortage of impressive sights, from futuristic sci-fi effects to sweeping historical panoramas — exactly what you’d expect from a collaboration between visual maestros like the Wachowskis and Tywker. Watch it below.

In a “Director’s Commentary” clip on the site, the Wachowskis and Tykwer give a tongue-in-cheek outline of their process, from the moment they decided to work together to their trouble getting the film financed. The clip also marks the first public recorded appearance of Lana Wachowski, who previously went by Larry.
