Casting Net: Kiefer Sutherland to play villain in disaster movie 'Pompeii'; Plus, Kristen Wiig, Reese Witherspoon, more

• Kiefer Sutherland is in final talks to play the villain in Paul W.S. Anderson‘s (Resident Evil) take on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Consider him the Billy Zane of Pompeii, the history-based disaster romance movie that somehow didn’t get made when Titanic and Pearl Harbor were reeling in the big bucks at the box office. Sutherland joins Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), and Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) in the film that began production in Toronto last week. [THR]

• Christina Applegate isn’t finding any shortage of work after her sudden departure from NBC’s Up All Night. The comedienne is in final negotiations to star in Vacation, a reboot of the franchise that began with 1983’s National Lampoon’s Vacation. Also set to appear in the film is Ed Helms, who will play Rusty, Anthony Michael Hall‘s role in the original. [THR]

 It looks like Reese Witherspoon has another rom-com in the works. The Sweet Home Alabama actress is attached to produce and play a supporting role in The Engagements, a decades-spanning ensemble film that tells the story of five relationships by following a diamond engagement ring from the 1930s to the present. The film is based on a yet-to-be published book by J. Courtney Sullivan that will hit shelves June 11. [The Wrap]

• Two more actors have signed on for The Judge, the Warner Bros. dramedy about a successful attorney (Robert Downey, Jr.) who learns that his estranged father (Robert Duvall), a judge, is the suspect in a murder case. Today Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) and Dax Shepard (Parenthood) joined the cast, which also includes Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket). Set to direct the film is David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers). • Tammy, the project written and directed by Melissa McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, also gained two more stars today. Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed) will play the man who McCarthy’s character meets when she hits the road after she loses her job and finds out her husband is cheating on her. Susan Sarandon is also in the midst of talks to join the film. Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are producing the film. [Deadline] [THR]

• Things are also coming together for another Ferrell/McKay project, Welcome to MeKristen Wiig is in talks to play the comedy film’s lead character, a woman with dissociative personality disorder who spends her lottery winnings on creating a cable access talk show about her life. Wiig is also set to work with Ferrell and McKay on the Anchorman sequel. [THR]
