Casting Net: Michael Fassbender for 'Macbeth'; Plus, Jamie Foxx in talks for 'Annie', more

• Michael Fassbender (Shame) is attached to play the title role in a film update of Macbeth, William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy about a scheming nobleman intent on ruling Scotland. The play has been adapted for the big screen a number of times, including Orson Welles’ 1948 version in which he also played the character of Macbeth, and Roman Polanski’s 1971 version which starred Jon Finch. Justin Kurzel (The Snowtown Murders) will direct the Fassbender update which will reportedly use the original language. The part of Lady Macbeth has not been cast yet. [Screen Daily]

• Jamie Foxx is in talks to star in Will Gluck’s (Easy A) film update of Annie, alongside Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Quvenzhané Wallis. The Django Unchained star would play Benjamin Stacks, an update on the Daddy Warbucks character, famously played by Albert Finney in the 1982 John Huston film. Foxx is no stranger to musicals, having appeared in both Dreamgirls and Ray. Will Smith and Jay-Z are producing the film, which is aiming for a 2014 release. [THR]

• Max Winkler’s (Ceremony) The Coward is turning into a veritable reunion of the boys on Girls. Chris O’Dowd (The Sapphires) is in talks to star with Adam Driver (Lincoln) in the comedy about an 18th century nobleman who is too cowardly to duel. The Bridesmaids actor is currently starring in Christopher Guest’s HBO comedy Family Tree, and recently scored an ensemble role in St. Vincent de Van Nuys with Bill Murray and Naomi Watts. He also has a part in Thor: The Dark World, and voices the part of Grub in Epic (out May 24). [The Wrap]

• James Franco is set to direct and star in The Garden of Last Days, an adaptation of Andre Dubus III’s novel, a multi-story tale set in Florida days before Sept. 11, 2001. The characters include a stripper, her daughter, a mysterious foreigner, and an angry drunk. Dubus’ previous novel, House of Sand and Fog, also got the big screen treatment in the 2003 adaptation starring Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley. Franco’s adaptation of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying premieres in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival. [Deadline]

• Reports surfaced Monday that Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) may be in talks to star in Matthew Vaughn’s (Kick-Ass) adaptation of Marvel’s The Secret Service. EW reached out to Vaughn’s company Marv Films for confirmation, but have yet to hear back. Firth is also reportedly in talks to star in Woody Allen’s next feature with Emma Stone, which will be shot in the South of France. • Lake Bell (Childrens Hospital) is set to join Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Alan Arkin (Argo) and Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi) in Million Dollar Arm. In the film, Hamm will play a sports agent who devises an unconventional scheme to find new baseball talent —  he sets up a reality show in India for Cricket players to compete. Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) will direct the Disney film from a Thomas McCarthy (The Station Agent, Win Win) script. Bell’s well-received feature directorial debut In a World…will hit theaters Aug. 9. [Indiewire]

• In The Upside of Anger, Kevin Costner received positive reviews for his portrayal of a former baseball star and prematurely curmudgeonly bachelor. Now, Costner is set to re-team with director Mike Binder for his next project, Black and White. The racial drama follows Costner’s character as he tries to raise his bi-racial granddaughter after her mother and her grandmother die. When the child’s paternal grandmother resurfaces, they spar over how to raise her.  Costner can be seen next in Man of Steel (out June 14) and is currently filming Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day. Shannon Woodward (The Riches) is set to join TJ Miller (Cloverfield), Adam Pally (Happy Endings), and Thomas Middleditch (The Campaign) in Search Party. When Nardo (Middleditch) gets stranded in Mexico (sans clothes), his roommates (Pally and Miller), come to his rescue. Woodward will play Nardo’s on again, off again girlfriend. Best known for portraying Sabrina on Fox’s Raising Hope, Woodward can also be seen in Adult World, which premiered recently at the Tribeca Film Festival. [THR]

• The 2012 Black List Hillary Clinton biopic Rodham has just picked up a director — James Ponsoldt who directed Sundance favorite The Spectaular Now with Shailene Woodley and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The report says that a number of high-profile young actresses are interested in portraying the future Secretary of State and First Lady, and that the role of Clinton will be cast before they begin to figure out financing.
