Casting Net: Jerry O'Connell joins 'Veronica Mars' movie; Plus, 'Gone Girl' still trying to find its girl, more

There’s a new Lamb brother in town. Jerry O’Connell (Burning Love) has joined the cast of the Veronica Mars movie as Dan Lamb, Sheriff Don’s (Michael Muhney) brother. In the Kickstarter update announcing the news, creator and director Rob Thomas traced his interest in O’Connell back to the movie Pirahna. “The performance in that movie that I couldn’t get over was Jerry O’Connell’s take on an amoral, coked up and soon-to-be penis-less smut peddler. I just kept wanting to get back to scenes of Jerry chewing scenery.” O’Connell even recorded a video for fans on the shoot. Welcome to Neptune, Sheriff Dan.

With Ben Affleck onboard to star in David Fincher‘s take on Gillian Flynn‘s thriller Gone Girl as Nick Dunne, the part of Amy is still up in the air. A host of high-profile actresses have been rumored to be involved, including Reese Witherspoon, who is producing the film, Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, and Emily Blunt. The Hollywood Reporter writes that the latest front-runner is Rosamund Pike, who recently starred in Jack Reacher. Variety also reports that Julianne Hough, Olivia Wilde, and Abbie Cornish have submitted audition tapes. [THR]

Everest, another take on the tragic 1996 climb that left eight climbers dead, could have a veritable all-star cast. Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), John Hawkes (The Sessions), Jake Gyllenhaal (Source Code), and Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) are in talks to star in the film for director Baltasar Kormakur (The Deep). Speaking of Jake Gyllenhaal, The Wrap reports that the actor has dropped out of Into the Woods in favor of Dan Gilroy‘s Nightcrawler, about a guy who gets wrapped up in the world of Los Angeles crime reporters. Renee Russo (The Thomas Crown Affair) will also star. [The Wrap, Variety]

Community star Gillian Jacobs will play Kevin Costner‘s girlfriend in the Mike Binder racial drama Black and White. Jacobs is currently filming Hot Tub Time Machine 2 and will be back on the Community set after that. Her upcoming features include the horror flick Milo and Walk of Shame with Elizabeth Banks and James Marsden. [THR]
