Casting Net: Meg Ryan to direct, star in 'Human Comedy' adaptation; Plus, Forest Whitaker in 'Taken 3,' more

• Meg Ryan will make her directorial debut with Ithaca, an adaptation of William Saroyan‘s novel The Human Comedy, which frequent co-star Tom Hanks will executive-produce. The story follows the teenage Homer Macauley, left at home in Ithaca, Calif., to care for his mother, sister, and little brother, Ulysses, while his older brother fights in World War II. Ryan will also star in the film opposite Melanie Griffith, Sam Shepard, and Jack Quaid (Ryan’s 21-year-old son, who played Marvel in The Hunger Games). Clarence Brown directed a version of the story in a 1943 film starring Mickey Rooney. [THR]

• Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) is in talks to join franchise star Liam Neeson in Taken 3. Olivier Megaton, who directed Neeson in Taken 2, is set to return to direct the third film, which will also see the return of Maggie Grace as Kim, the always-in-peril daughter of Bryan Mills (Neeson). • Brie Larson (Short Term 12) is in talks to star in The Good Luck of Right Now — an adaptation of Silver Linings Playbook author Matthew Quick‘s upcoming novel (out Feb. 11). Mike White (Enlightened) is writing the screenplay for Little Miss Sunshine team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris to direct. [The Wrap]

• Richard Gere is set to star in Time Out of Mind about a New York man who is forced to live in a shelter. Rampart‘s Oren Moverman (who co-wrote I’m Not There and The Messenger) is directing. [Deadline]

• Emma Roberts (We’re the Millers) has replaced Hailee Steinfeld in the Jonathan Mostow thriller For the Dogs, about an assassin who helps a college student avenge the death of her family. Avatar‘s Sam Worthington will play the assassin. [Just Jared]

• Laura Marano (Austin & Ally) will lead up the indie drama A Sort of Homecoming about a news producer still reeling from a high school debate trauma. Marano will play the teenage version of the producer for director Maria Burton. [Variety]

• Daniel Craig (James Bond) is set to star in the upcoming spy thriller The Whole Truth. Details of the plot have not yet been released, but Nicholas Kazan (Enough) is said to be signing on to write the script for the film. The Whole Truth will be produced by Atlas Entertainment’s Richard Suckle. [Variety]
