Will he be good? Will he be bad? Or will that be the central question surrounding Adam Driver’s role in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII?

Sources close to the actor confirm to EW that he is one raspy breath away from being announced as part of J.J. Abrams’ follow-up to Return of the Jedi.

Many actors have been rumored for a part in the movie, set for release Dec. 18, 2015, but with filming beginning in a few months, decisions are finally being made about who will inhabit this “galaxy far, far away.”

Lucasfilm and Disney declined to comment on the initial story, broken by Variety. But those close to the 30-year-old Girls star have acknowledged this has been an arrangement long in the works.

Audiences first discovered Driver in the HBO series Girls, where he plays Adam, the oddball boyfriend of Lena Dunham’s Hannah Horvath. He’s also made waves with standout supporting roles in Frances Ha, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Lincoln. Aside from Lincoln, Driver has always tended toward smaller films, and a role in one of the world’s most high-profile franchises is clearly a big departure.

Dunham tweeted congratulations to him as the news broke:

A few minutes later, Dunham followed up with a take back of her apparent confirmation.

But others who know the actor well privately acknowledge he is indeed close to being confirmed for an unspecified role.

Driver will next be seen in a major supporting turn in This Is Where I Leave You, director Shawn Levy’s adaptation of novelist Jonathan Tropper’s family dysfunction comedy (out Sept. 12). Driver plays Phillip, the ne’er-do-well youngest sibling of Tina Fey, Jason Bateman, and Corey Stoll, who brings his much older therapist/girlfriend (Connie Britton) back home for his father’s funeral to the distress of his mother, played by Jane Fonda.

He’s also recently wrapped Noah Baumbach’s relationship study While We’re Young, starring Ben Stiller, Amanda Seyfried, and Naomi Watts, and is currently at work on Jeff Nichols’ sci-fi drama Midnight Run.

With fans hungry for more (or any) information on the new film, Stars Wars: Episode VII casting has just made the jump into hyperspace whether the powers that be were ready for it or not. But the question remains: Is this the villain you were looking for?
