'Community' creator Dan Harmon's 'Harmontown' documentary: Watch the trailer -- VIDEO

You may know Dan Harmon as the tremendously creative architect of Community. You may also know him as the troubled dude who got in a feud with Chevy Chase and also got fired from Community (and then rehired). Now you can get to know him in ways that will likely both confirm and confound your expectations in a new documentary Harmontown, which premieres at SXSW this Saturday. The film chronicles his exploits on the road with his zany, confessional Harmontown podcast during his yearlong hiatus and explores his relationship with his fans (who view him as a non-conformist hero) and with himself (which ain’t always pretty).

Friends and co-workers pay tribute to him here by calling him “a straight-up nerd” and “no stranger to self-destruction.” Notes Sarah Silverman, with whom he co-created The Sarah Silverman Program: “I am his biggest fan — and I fired him.” Based on a just-released two-and-a-half-minute trailer, Harmontown appears not to be a highly sanitized attempt at image polishing, but rather some unfettered, messy access to a complicated, self-aware soul. “I know that I’m not just a fat, fired alcoholic,” Harmon says. “And I have effects on people.” Press play on the trailer below, because don’t you want six seasons and a movie and a documentary?
