Casting Net: Chloe Moretz in talks for 'The 5th Wave'; Plus, Nina Dobrev, more

• Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie) is in final talks to star in The 5th Wave, based on Rick Yancey’s sci-fi YA novel. In the story, 16-year-old Cassie is one of the last humans on earth after four devastating waves of alien attacks, and she’s determined to get her baby brother back. J. Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) is set to direct. According to the report, it’s another potential franchise for Sony. Moretz is also starring in the adaptation of YA sensation If I Stay which hits theaters on Aug. 22.  [The Wrap]

Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) and Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) are joining the horror comedy The Final Girls. In the movie, a group of girlfriends (including Taissa Farmiga) are transported into an ’80s thriller, which starred her dead mother (Malin Akerman). They need to defeat the killer and escape the movie alive. Todd Strauss-Schulson is set to direct. [THR]

• Ken Marino (Children’s Hospital) has boarded the cast of Goosebumps. Based on the popular children’s series, the movie adaptation stars Jack Black as a reclusive R.L. Stine who teams up with some kids when the monsters in his imagination are unleashed onto the town. Marino will play a high school coach in the Rob Letterman-directed pic. [Deadline]

• Thomas Lennon (Reno 911) has boarded the live-action/animation hybrid Monster Trucks. Plot details are not being shared, but the report says that Lennon’s role is “significant.” [Deadline]

• Adrien Brody (The Pianist) will join Salma Hayek in The Septembers of Shiraz. Based on Dalia Sofer’s book, the story follows a well-off Iranian family before and after the Iranian revolution. Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) is directing. [Deadline]

• Emilie de Ravin (Lost) will play a mysterious woman who goes on a journey with a traumatized marine (Finn Wittrock) in the indie The Submarine Kid. [Variety]
