'Star Wars: Episode VII': J.J. Abrams reacts to leaked set photos

J.J. Abrams has taken to Twitter to comment on photos recently leaked from the set of his upcoming space epic, which otherwise has had its deflector shields up. (Details on the film’s plot, characters, and setting are still scarce.)

The director addressed the situation with a sense of humor, speaking to true Star Wars geeks with a joke that only they would get.

In the picture above, Abrams — posting to his production company Bad Robot’s Twitter handle — presents a hand-written message to fans on his own letterhead: “I wish people would stop leaking photos from Episode VII. And making ridiculous claims that the Millennium Falcon is in the movie.”

He’s referring to a collection of photos posted by TMZ. The first show background actors dressed in grungy desert gear in the sands of Abu Dhabi (looking a lot like Luke Skywalker’s scorched homeworld Tatooine). The most compelling image is a full-size replica of Han Solo’s spacecraft, the Millennium Falcon, under construction in a soundstage.

So what’s the joke?

Look at what Abrams’ card happens to be sitting on. Recognize that chessboard?

One phrase: “Let the wookiee win.”
