Casting Net: Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts join 'Michael'

Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts will join James Franco in Michael, directed by Justin Kelly. Based on the New York Times Magazine article by Benoit Denizet-Lewis titled “My Ex-Gay Friend,” the story follows a pastor who was formerly gay, but later renounced homosexuality. Quinto will play ex-boyfriend to Franco’s character; Roberts will play his girlfriend. Chris Zylca (The Leftovers) will play another former love interest. Gus Van Sant is executive producer, alongside producers Franco, Vince Jolivette, Michael Mendelsohn, Ron Singer, and Scott Reeve. [Variety]

Walt Disney Animation Studios has revealed its voice cast for Big Hero 6, which follows a young robotics prodigy, Hiro Hamada, and his robot friend, Baymax. The duo form a team of crime fighters to save the city of San Fransokyo. Ryan Potter will take the lead as Hiro, and Scott Adsit will voice Baymax. The rest of the cast includes: Maya Rudolph, James Cromwell, Damon Wayans Jr., T.J. Miller, Alan Tudyk, Jamie Chung, Genesis Rodriguez, and Daniel Henney. Big Hero 6 marks the first Disney film to feature Marvel characters. Don Hall and Jordan Roberts are adapting from the Marvel comic mini-series of the same name. The film hits theaters on Nov. 7 in 3-D. [Deadline]

Landon Liboiron (Hemlock Grove), Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory), and Cody Horn are set to star in Burning Bodhi, directed by Matthew McDuffie, who also wrote the indie drama. The film follows a young man (Liboiron) in his 20s who discovers that one of his best friends from high school, Bodhi, died suddenly of an aneurysm. He heads home to New Mexico to cope with the death, but finds he must also confront his issues with friends and family. Virginia Madsen and Sasha Pieterse will also appear in the film. Marshall Bear, Mary Vernieu, and Michael Lazo are producing. [THR]

Morena Baccarin (Homeland) has joined Malevolent, an animated horror thriller that follows a young woman (Dani Lennon) who must defeat her powerful, evil father to save herself and her siblings. The film will be directed by Jason Axinn; it also stars Ray Wise and Bill Moseley. Baccarin has been cast as a Gamemaster, a supernatural being who entraps humans into conflicts while her species bets on the results. Jim Cirile and Tanya C. Klein wrote the script and will executive produce the film. Paige Barnett and Cindi Rice will produce. The Coverage Ink Films project is aiming for an early 2015 release. [THR]

Japanese stars Sometani Shota (Himizu) and Maeda Atsuko (The Drudgery Train) star in Ryan Hiroki‘s Sayonara Kabukicho. Sometani plays a “love hotel” manager, while Maeda plays a failed musician and his live-in lover. Minami Kaho, Matsushige Yutaka, Omoro Nao, Murakami Jun, and Taguchi Tomorowo occupy the supporting cast. Arai Haruhiko wrote the script for the film, which will open in January in Japan through distributor Tokyo Theatre. [Variety]
