'Bourne Legacy' trailer: Get busy living, or get busy dying

“You think that Jason Bourne was the whole story? There’s a lot more going on here.”

That’s the sales pitch for The Bourne Legacy, the Matt Damon-less side boot starring Jeremy Renner as another confused assassin. But in the second trailer for the August action movie, we see plenty of Bourne’s fingerprints. We even see his name etched in wood, as if he were Treadstone’s version of Brooks from The Shawshank Redemption.

Judging from some of the other familiar faces and scenes from the original trilogy, it looks as if writer/director Tony Gilroy is borrowing the gimmick from the third film and building scenes that we later learn occurred simultaneously. “Jason Bourne is in Manhattan,” reports a stunned government office drone to David Strathairn’s evil group leader. So how was Renner’s Aaron Cross involved in those events, or the assassination of a British journalist (Paddy Considine) at the train station? Watch below. READ FULL STORY »

'Dark Knight Rises' TV spot: Feeling strong now?

Fans of Batman are always digging though the Dark Knight’s comic book archives when trying to predict where Christopher and Jonathan Nolan are going to take their hero next. But as The Dark Knight Rises comes more into focus following the release of a third TV spot, it’s becoming clear they might be taking their cues from an entirely different source: the Rocky franchise.

I’m kidding, of course, but there are a few odd parallels between what’s been teased in the trio of recent clips and Rocky III and Rocky IV  — at least if you really want there to be. Most obviously, Bane is an amalgam of Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago, a brutally violent drug-enhanced freak. Like Rocky Balboa, Batman and Bruce Wayne are now enjoying the fruits of their labors and perhaps they’ve grown a little soft. Then, suddenly, Bane strikes, putting Commissioner Gordon in the hospital — read: Mickey’s death — and shaking Batman’s confidence. He’s got to get his mojo back to defend his honor and Gotham, but can he be that hero again? “You’re not Batman anymore,” whines Alfred, in the most recent TV spot. Ouch. That’s almost as harsh as Adrian shouting at Rocky from the top of the stairs in Rocky IV, “You can’t win!” Watch for more clues below. READ FULL STORY »

'Amour' wins Palme d'Or at Cannes

Amour

Michael Haneke became only the eighth director to win two Palme d’Or awards, as his tender marital drama Amour took the top prize at the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival. (The Austrian filmmaker also won for The White Ribbon in 2009.) Former James Bond baddie Mads Mikkelsen was honored as best actor, for his role as a man falsely accused of sexually abusing a child in The Hunt. Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan shared the best actress award for their performances in Beyond the Hills, about a nun and her jealous former lesbian lover. READ FULL STORY »

'The Dark Knight Rises' poster: Catwoman leaves her mark

Judging by the brief glimpses of The Dark Knight Rises we’ve seen so far, we know that Batman is going to take a beating — likely at the hands of the muscled terrorist Bane. Anne Hathaway’s cat burglar, on the other hand, has been much more difficult to pin down. Is she part of Bane’s “liberation” front, a freelancer with her own scheme, or a potential ally for our aging hero. The most recent TV spot showcased the semi-playful costume-party banter between Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle, who shrewdly ended up getting her own ride home.

But the newest movie poster — uncovered on the film’s website by a hawk-eyed reader of Batman-News.com — hints that the feline vamp might not flinch from stepping on Batman’s neck, should the opportunity arise. True to the character’s ambivalence, though, she leaves her mark with a kiss. Check it out below.

'Dark Blood' trailer: The unfinished last film of River Phoenix

When River Phoenix died in 1993, the unfinished movie Dark Blood was thought to have died with him. But last year, its director, George Sluizer, began making noises about releasing the film with the possible assistance of Joaquin Phoenix, who the French director suggested could perform his brother’s voiceover. The Phoenix family quickly denied any such conversations, but that hasn’t deterred Sluizer, who’s best known for making The Vanishing and the Dutch movie it was based upon, Spoorloos. He recently cut a trailer for Dark Blood and posted it on a site dedicated to raising funds for the completion of the film, with the hopes of premiering the movie at the Dutch Film Festival in September. Take a peek. READ FULL STORY »

'Amazing Spider-Man' footage to screen before 'Men in Black 3'

Taking a page from the Batman playbook, Sony will preview six minutes of The Amazing Spider-Man in front of IMAX 3-D showings of Men in Black 3, which opens at midnight this Thursday. Last December, Christopher Nolan unveiled the prologue to his Dark Knight Rises before IMAX screenings of Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol. Of course, we’ve seen a lot more of the new Spider-Man, including a recent four-minute clip from the reboot, than we have of Christian Bale’s last turn behind the cowl. But positive buzz continues to grow for the new Spidey, who somehow despite nearly $2.5 billion in worldwide grosses, finds himself as the box-office underdog sandwiched between the Avengers and Batman. The Amazing Spider-Man opens July 3.

'The Master' teaser: Welcome back, Joaquin Phoenix

Paul Thomas Anderson, the auteur behind instant-classics Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood, has been more secretive than ever about his next film, The Master. Is it about L. Ron Hubbard and the Church of Scientology? Or something else? The religious drama, set for release on Oct. 12, remains shrouded in mystery except for its cast, which includes Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic church leader, Amy Adams as his wife, and Joaquin Phoenix, who plays an alcoholic drifter.

With the release of the film’s first teaser, we get a peek at Phoenix’s troubled character: a violent, former World War II sailor who suffers blackouts. We see him sharpening a machete during some R&R on what is likely some South Pacific island, drunkenly putting the finishing touches on a voluptuous female sand sculpture, and surreptitiously stealing 180-proof torpedo fuel from below decks of his ship. “Are you mixed up?” asks a military shrink, while the strum of a guitar duels with the tick-tock of a clock. Watch it below. READ FULL STORY »

'The Woman in Black': Daniel Radcliffe on his post-Potter gothic horror hit -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Daniel Radcliffe has grown up before our very eyes. When we first met him as Harry Potter, he was only 11 years old. More than a decade later, he bravely launched the post-Potter phase of his movie career in February’s The Woman in Black, a stylish gothic horror film in which he plays a widowed lawyer — and a young father — who encounters a terrifying supernatural secret in a small English town. The hit movie proved that Radcliffe — who’d already demonstrated his non-Potter bona fides on Broadway — won’t be boxed in by playing the world’s most famous wizard.

In the first of two exclusive behind-the-scenes clips from the movie, which arrives on home video tomorrow, Radcliffe discusses how and why he chose The Woman in Black as his first post-Potter role. The most impressive surprise? He apparently celebrated his final day on the set of Potter, concluding a decade of moviemaking history that represented practically half of his own life, by diving in to the script for his next film. “I read the [Woman in Black] script for the first time four hours after I had done my last shot on Potter, I think, and loved it immediately,” he says.

In the second video clip, Radcliffe discusses the challenge of playing a father and his own fear of scary movies. Watch below. READ FULL STORY »

Bradley Cooper has a way with 'The Words' -- VIDEO

In Limitless, Bradley Cooper played a struggling writer who stumbles upon the secret to genius. It’s a theme that reappears in The Words, Cooper’s Sundance film about a semi-talented novelist who, in a moment of desperation, cuts some corners to become the celebrity scribe he’s always dreamed of being. “I’m not who I thought I was and I’m terrified that I never will be,” he confesses to his gorgeous wife (Zoe Saldana) before a fateful opportunity presents itself. In this case, it’s not a magic pill that opens the door to fame; rather, he finds an abandoned manuscript and decides to publish it as his own. But with every gift, there is a curse. Watch the trailer below. READ FULL STORY »

'Maniac' trailer: Elijah Wood goes a little mad sometimes

Elijah Wood seems like one of the gentlest, kindest, most ethereal actors in movies, so the notion of him playing a murderous serial killer is initially difficult to fathom. I mean, he wouldn’t harm a fly. Ah… he wouldn’t harm a fly. That’s the rub, isn’t it? That “harm a fly” line is famously from the final scene of Psycho, and Wood, who stars in a remake of Maniac as a slasher with mommy issues, possesses the same preternatural sweetness that Anthony Perkins did in Hitchcock’s 1960 classic.

Take a look at the new NSFW teaser for Maniac, which debuts this week at Cannes. READ FULL STORY »
