'The Avengers' Tom Hiddleston on Woody Allen and 'Midnight in Paris': 'It was a surreal dream'

If you’ve seen The Avengers – and surely, that’s most of you now considering the film recently crossed the 1 billion dollar mark worldwide — you are familiar with Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the bad guy who managed to steal a whole lot of scenes from a bunch of A-list superheroes.

But Hiddleston has had quite a year in addition to Avengers. Since introducing his villainous supervillain character last May in Thor, the Brit has appeared in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, played opposite Rachel Weisz in the critically acclaimed Deep Blue Sea, and been the spitting image of F. Scott Fitzgerald in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. He found out he had won that latter role when he received a letter from Allen himself. “It was three sentences long,” Hiddleston told EW. “Dear Tom, I’m making a movie in Paris this summer. I attached some pages. I’d love for you to play the role of Scott.” READ FULL STORY »

EW has confirmed that Kristen Stewart will star (and receive a producing credit) in Cali. As first reported by Variety, Cali — set unsurprisingly in Los Angeles — was written by 30 Minutes or Less‘ Michael Diliberti, and centers on a couple with a healthy love of danger and bad choices, who sell a fake snuff film featuring Stewart’s character.

Stewart will next be seen as Snow White in June 1′s Snow White and the Huntsman

Tribeca Film Festival: Ed Burns on the state of indie films

What would a Tribeca Film Festival be without Ed Burns? The writer/director/actor has long been associated with the downtown Manhattan festival (his films Newlyweds and Nice Guy Johnny both premiered there) and this year is no exception. As the culmination of the 2011 American Express My Movie Pitch contest, Burns wrote, produced, and directed a short film, Doggy Bags (which can be seen here) based on a winning story entry from Susan Brennan.

On Wednesday, Doggy Bags screened before an enthusiastic crowd at the Soho House, followed by a Q&A with Burns and Brennan, who told the filmmaker that working with him had been inspirational (she has since completed two feature-length scripts). “This is so great for Susan,” Burns told EW later that afternoon. “I’m so glad I picked the right pitch. You could see it when she was on set; she was taking everything in. She kind of got her mind around the idea of, oh, I could do this too.” READ FULL STORY »

Tribeca Film Festival: The incredible story behind 'Searching for Sugar Man'

The documentary Searching for Sugar Man – a fascinating unraveling of a three decade plus mystery about a musician — was a sensation at Sundance, winning not just the Audience Award and Special Jury Prize but also a distributor. (Sony Pictures Classic will release the film in select theaters on July 27).

Now Searching for Sugar Man is enjoying a successful Tribeca Film Festival run than will undoubtedly win more fans over to the music of the almost-forgotten Rodriguez. A little history: in the late ’60s, Rodriguez was discovered by Motown producers who predicted he’d be one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. READ FULL STORY »

Tribeca Film Festival: Eric Bana goes dark for 'Deadfall'

Sunday night, despite some pretty dismal rain in New York City, the stars of the new film, Deadfallbraved the elements to pose prettily on the red carpet.

But a few hours earlier Deadfall lead Eric Bana spoke to EW from the much drier (and more casual) quarters of the Chelsea Hotel about the new film, directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters) and co-starring Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam, Kate Mara, Sissy Spacek, and Kris Kristofferson.

Bana plays a smooth-talking thief who, along with his sister (Wilde), is involved in a casino robbery gone wrong which forces them to flee into the snowy terrain near the Canadian boarder in whiteout conditions. They split up to better to reach Canada without detection, and through a series of twists and (violent) turns are destined to cross paths with a boxer just out of prison (Humnam) and his parents (Spacek and Kristofferson). Tribeca Film Festival: At the 'Knuckleball!' premiere, everyone has a ball

knuckleball

Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey arrived to Saturday’s Knuckleball! premiere event at downtown Manhattan’s World Financial Center Plaza straight from Citi Field and a win over the San Francisco Giants. Gazing at the photographers and film reporters encroaching on his personal space, he didn’t hesitate in answering EW’s first question: What’s harder — beating the Giants or doing all this Tribeca Film Festival press? “This,” he said with a laugh. “Well, maybe it’s not harder, but it’s certainly overwhelming.” He smiled. “But it’s exciting! The film is beautiful and I think it captures what the pitch is and also the lives of the men that throw it.”

Knuckleball!, directed by Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work), is indeed about this enigmatic, erratic, and rarely thrown pitch that, when thrown correctly, looks deceptively easy. But in fact, it’s a pitch that — thrown with the fingernails to eliminate spin — makes it impossible for anyone (including the pitcher) to predict where it will go. Few have mastered it, and since Boston’s Tim Wakefield retired earlier this year, Dickey is the only current player in the league still using it. READ FULL STORY »

Tribeca Film Festival: Emily Blunt on 'Five Year Engagement', 'Your Sister's Sister', and Tom Cruise

The Tribeca Film Festival may have only just begun, but Emily Blunt is already emerging as one of the brightest stars of the downtown fest. She co-stars with Jason Segel in Five Year Engagement, which opened the festival on Wednesday night (complete with glitzy, celebrity-dappled party at the Museum of Modern Art). And she’s also in (EW office favorite) Your Sister’s Sister, directed by Lynn Shelton (Humpday) and co-starring Mark Duplass and Rosemarie DeWitt (in theaters June 15).

“It’s lovely,” Blunt says of her big Tribeca splash. “But I just worry that it’s nauseating. Like…her again?” She needn’t worry, as Your Sister’s Sister‘s Dewitt and Shelton quickly reassured her when EW sat down with them to discuss their film. (Much, much more on that conversation later).

And again in some pretty tough-looking armor astride a horse. “I don’t even like the dynamic between rider and horse,” Stewart told EW. “It’s like, I don’t want to boss the guy around!”
