The year of Benny Batch continues! DreamWorks announced today that principal photography has commenced on its heretofore untitled feature film about the creation of the controversial website WikiLeaks and its co-founder and international fugitive Julian Assange. Now titled The Fifth Estate, the film traces the meteoric rise of the site through the eyes of Assange colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg. He’s played by Inglourious Basterds‘ Daniel Brühl, who’s pictured above with Benedict Cumberbatch as Assange in the first official image from the film. • George Clooney is attached to star in and produce an untitled crime film written by Argo scribe Chris Terrio. Filmmaker Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy) is attached to direct and produce, along with Clooney’s producing partner Grant Heslov. And that’s all we got for this one, folks — the details of the script remain top secret. Probably not a sci-fi adventure set in the Persian desert, though. [Variety]
• Inglourious Basterds‘ Daniel Brühl is logging onto the untitled Wikileaks movie as Daniel Domscheit-Berg (gesundheit!), the man who helped Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch – i.e. Benny Batch) build his site for clandestine government secrets. James McAvoy had been in talks for the role, but they fell through. Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn) is directing the film from a script by Fringe writer Josh Singer, based on Domscheit-Berg’s book Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World’s Most Dangerous Website and Luke Harding and David Leigh’s book, WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War On Secrecy. • Guy Pearce, Rosamund Pike (Wrath of the Titans) and Bryan Brown (Australia) have boarded the Aussie production The Art of the Engine Driver, a period drama based on Steven Carroll’s novel about a New Year’s Eve party that goes sour. Mark Joffe (The MatchMaker) is directing from a script by Australian TV writer Matt Cameron. [Deadline]
• Mark Indelicato (Justin on Ugly Betty) has joined the ensemble cast of White Bird, a drama about a woman (Shailene Woodley) coping with the sudden disappearance of her mother. Christopher Meloni, Gabourey Sidibe, Eva Green, and Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) costar. Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin) is directing from his script. [Variety]

In Frost/Nixon, director Ron Howard and screenwriter Peter Morgan tackled a legendary contest between two men with widely divergent personalities. Substitute the roads of Europe for a TV studio, and you’ve got Rush, Howard and Morgan’s 2013 film about two race car drivers — Englishman James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl, Inglourious Basterds) — who went head to head for the Formula 1 championship in 1976 that came down to the final laps of the final race, tailor-made for a feature film.
