Casting Net: Xavier Samuel cast as The Monster in contemporary 'Frankenstein'

• Twilight: Eclipse star Xavier Samuel has been cast as Adam/The Monster in a new contemporary version of Mary Shelley’s classic FrankensteinDanny Huston (Magic City) and Carrie-Anne Moss (Vegas) will star as modern-day Victor and Elizabeth Frankenstein, a husband and wife team of eccentric scientists living in Los Angeles who create the creature. Bernard Rose (Candyman) has adapted Shelley’s work for the picture he is directing. • Michael Peña is in early talks to join Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi action film The Martian. Based on the e-book by Andy Weir, the movie will star Matt Damon as a stranded astronaut on Mars trying to make it back to Earth alive. Peña, who will soon be seen in the film Fury and the Fox TV event Gracepoint, could also be joined by Jessica Chastain, who is currently in negotiations for the picture as well. [Variety]

• Kate Bosworth, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Grey’s Anatomy), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Gina Carano (Fast & Furious 6) have all boarded the ensemble heist pic Bus 657 starring Robert De Niro. Morgan and Bautista will costar as co-workers attempting to rob a casino owned by De Niro’s character in order to pay for Morgan’s daughter’s medical treatment and end up hijackacking a bus full of hostages in the process. Bosworth will play De Niro’s estranged daughter with Carano as a police officer in pursuit of the bus. Scott Mann (The Tournament) is directing the action thriller that will begin filming in Alabama next month from a script by Stephen Sepher and Max Adams. • Game of Thrones actress Natalie Dormer will star in the action thriller Patient Zero about an unprecedented global pandemic that allows an aggressive form of rabies to turn victims into predators. Stefan Ruzowitzky (Deadfall) is directing from a script written by Mike Le. [Deadline]

• Ender’s Game star Asa Butterfield may be entering Tim Burton‘s adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ bestselling novel Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Though no official offer has been made, Burton has his eyes on Butterfield to play the coveted role of 16-year-old Jacob Portman, a boy who encounters a group of peculiar children with special abilities and their female guardian in a time loop while seeking answers for his grandfather’s murder. Eva Green is set to star in the title role with production beginning in February for a March 4, 2016 release. • Ann Dowd (The Leftovers) has been cast opposite Sandra Bullock in the political dramedy Our Brand is Crisis. Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green is at the helm with Peter Straughan (Frank) writing the adaptation based on the 2005 documentary of the same name about American political tactics used in a South American campaign. Scoot McNairy and Anthony Mackie have already signed on for the film produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov‘s Smokehouse Pictures. • Sarah Gadon (Belle) will join Aaron Paul and Jamie Dornan as the female lead in The 9th Life Of Louis Drax. The Canadian actress will play Natalie, the mother of the young boy who suffers a a near-fatal fall on his ninth birthday. Actor Max Minghella (The Mindy Project) will make his screenwriting debut with the adaptation of Liz Jensen’s best selling novel that will be directed by Alexandre Aja. Minghella also appears in Aja’s upcoming fantasy horror flick Horns starring Daniel Radcliffe. [Deadline]

Casting Net: James Franco, Omar Sy are 'Good People'; Plus Anna Kendrick, Tom Hiddleston, more

• James Franco, Omar Sy (the breakout star of The Intouchables), and Kate Hudson are set to star in the thriller Good People. Franco has been circling the project since late November 2012. Based on Marcus Sakey’s 2009 novel, the story is about a young couple burdened with crippling debt. They think they’ve found an out when their downstairs neighbor dies and leaves $370,000 in cash just sitting around. Suddenly they begin to encounter all sorts of unsavory characters. Danish director Henrik Genz will be making his English-language debut with the film. The Millennium Films project is expected to begin production in London at the end of May. The original story, like most of Sakey’s novels, was set in Chicago. [Deadline]

• Oscar-nominee and Pitch Perfect lead Anna Kendrick is set to star in the psychological thriller The Voices, alongside Ryan Reynolds. Gemma Arterton (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) has also joined the cast. In the film, Reynolds plays Jerry, a lonely bathtub factory worker with an evil talking cat and a kind talking dog. Persepolis author and director Marjane Satrapi is set to direct. [Deadline]

Casting Net: Harrison Ford reported to join 'Anchorman' sequel; Plus a new lead for Marvin Gaye biopic, Rebecca Hall, and more

• Harrison Ford is set to play another seasoned, Tom Brokaw-esque newscaster, according to a THR report. Thankfully he’ll bring his curmudgeonly charm to Anchorman: The Legend Continues, and not a Morning Glory sequel. Things had been somewhat quiet for Ford since 2011’s Cowboys and Aliens, but he’s been ramping up his on-screen presence lately with roles in the upcoming Jackie Robinson biopic 42 and the highly anticipated Ender’s Game adaptation. [THR]

EW reported in December that Lenny Kravitz had signed on to star in the Julien Temple-directed Marvin Gaye biopic Sexual Healing, but it seems the tides have changed. Kravitz was reportedly asked to drop out by Gaye’s son, Marvin Gaye III, and Monday it was reported that Law & Order alum Jesse L. Martin would step in to play the music legend. [Deadline]

• Robin Williams, Mila KunisPeter Dinklage, Melissa Leo, and James Earl Jones have signed on for The Angriest Man in Brooklyn, about a patient who is erroneously told he has 90 minutes to live. The comedy marks the first film from Field of Dreams director Phil Alden Robinson since 2002’s The Sum of All Fears. [Screen International]

• Jessica Biel, Chloe Moretz, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will star in The Devil in the Deep Blue Sea, about a widower (Morgan) who helps a girl (Moretz) construct a raft to cross the Atlantic Ocean. (Biel will play Morgan’s late wife.) Justin Timberlake will add two more hyphens to his multi-hyphenate resume, meanwhile, serving as the film’s composer and music supervisor. Bill Purple will make his feature directing debut from a script by Robbie Pickering (Natural Selection). • Speaking of Chloe Moretz, the in demand actress is also in talks for Kick-Ass 2, reprising her role as Hit Girl, who will go into retirement. But will she stay there?! (No.) [Total Film]

Colin Firth, Emily Watson, and Tom Wilkinson will star in actor Rupert Everett‘s directoral debut The Happy Prince, a biopic about Oscar Wilde. Everett will play the famed author and playwright, and also wrote the screenplay. [Variety]
