The first trailer for Camp X-Ray, featuring Kristen Stewart as a Guantanamo Bay guard, has been released.

The IFC film, directed by Peter Sattler, debuted at Sundance and also stars Lane Garrison, Joseph Julian Soria, John Carroll Lynch, and Payman Maadi. It explores the relationship between Stewart’s guard (Stewart) and a detainee (Maadi).

In the trailer, an officer warns the guards not to let the detainees get inside of their heads. Later, when asked how she finds Guantanamo Bay, Stewart’s character responds: “It’s not as black and white as they said it was going to be.”

Camp X-Ray hits theaters Oct. 17.

Kristen Stewart's Sundance movie, 'Camp X-Ray,' lands a distributor

The Kristen Stewart-in-Gitmo movie that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival has landed a distributor. IFC Films announced today that it had acquired the North American rights to the film, which tells the story of a friendship that develops between a lonely military guard (Stewart) and a detainee (A Separation‘s Payman Maadi) at the notorious prison for suspected terrorists in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Peter Sattler, the film received mixed reviews at the Utah festival.

“Peter Sattler has made a stirring, sensitive and thought-provoking film that features two powerhouse performances by Payman Maadi and Kristen Stewart,” said Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films, in a statement. “Maadi proves once again that he is a force to be reckoned with and Stewart undoubtedly gives the best and most moving performance of her already remarkable career.”

Sundance 2014: Kristen Stewart as a Guantanamo guard? I didn't buy it

On Entourage, Vincent Chase would do his dumb-whore popcorn movies (like Aqua-Man) and feel humiliated, but the truth is that he rarely looked more hapless than when he was making one of his “integrity” projects — like his Pablo Escobar biopic, or the I’m-just-Vinnie-from-the-block indie Queens Boulevard, which wound up getting showcased at Sundance. If Entourage wasn’t about Vincent Chase but was about Kristen Stewart instead, her Escobar-meets-Queens Boulevard wince-worthy integrity dud might be Camp X-Ray, in which Stewart plays a guard at Guantanamo Bay who winds up uncovering the big lie of American anti-terrorist policy by making friends with one of the prison camp’s detainees. Has he been unjustly imprisoned? Maybe, but as the film sees it, the real injustice is that he’s been locked up with no end in sight, and he’s nice. READ FULL STORY

Sundance 2014: Kristen Stewart and cast talk Guantanamo film 'Camp X-Ray'

CAMP-X-RAY-KRISTEN-STEWART.jpg

Director Peter Sattler and stars Kristen Stewart, Payman Moaadi, and Lane Garrison sat down with EW’s Sara Vilkomerson to talk about their new film, Camp X-Ray, which explores the relationship between a young woman stationed in Guantanamo Bay (Stewart) and a detainee (Moaadi).

Stewart is a far cry from her Twilight days in the film, donning military garb and bonding over the Harry Potter books with Moaadi’s character. Playing a prison guard, Garrison (Prison Break) admits his role was a new experience as well: “It was nice for me to not play a prisoner for once!”

Camp X-Ray premiered at Sundance on Friday.  Check out the full interview below.

Road to Sundance: When Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg starred in 'Adventureland' -- VIDEO

adventureland.jpg

Every Monday until the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, EW is celebrating a great success story from independent film’s most prestigious showcase. So far, we’ve revisited Lee Daniel’s Precious and Courtney Hunt’s Frozen River. Today, we look back at Adventureland, the 2009 comedy that featured a bunch of indie stars who were on the cusp of movie stardom.

To be fair, Kristen Stewart had just become a huge star when Adventureland pulled into Park City in 2009 — the first Twilight was playing in theaters — but she was still only 18 years old. Jesse Eisenberg was known best for indies like The Squid and the Whale and Rodger Dodger, while Ryan Reynolds’ name — after a decade of solid work — was just beginning to be in the mix for major studio blockbusters.

Together, they signed up with writer/director Greg Mottola, who was coming off the box-office success of Superbad, for this coming-of-age story about a recent college grad who reluctantly takes a summer job in 1987 at the local amusement park. Running the theme park is an odd couple played by Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, and the EW video interview below from 2009 is a fine time capsule for the actors, whose careers have all skyrocketed in the past four years.

Sundance 2014: Kristen Stewart, Anne Hathaway, and Lena Dunham lead the ladies to Park City

If the Sundance Film Festival has always been the place to discover tomorrow’s biggest stars in front of and behind the camera during the past 30 years, it seems to have become even more fruitful in recent years. From young filmmakers like Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station), Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), and Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud) to ready-to-launch superstars like Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) and Dane DeHaan (Kill Your Darlings), Hollywood has quickly found its future in the snowy peaks of Park City. “One of the biggest changes in the last 30 years is how independent film has become such a vital part of the cultural landscape now,” says Sundance director John Cooper. “It’s no longer an outside-Hollywood thing. It’s its own art form, and we’re feeling the power of that and the surge of that as we move forward.”

Put another way, though, independent film is no longer just for aspiring filmmakers and undiscovered actors. Yes, it’s still the place where unknowns arrive with hopes of becoming the next Felicity Jones or Lee Daniels. But it also represents opportunities for established superstars to play, to flex dormant muscles, and to reinvent themselves. Among today’s announcement of Sundance’s 2014 Dramatic and Documentary competitions, as well as its NEXT section — which highlights digital filmmaking with an eye on tomorrow’s storytelling techniques — were films starring Kristen Stewart, who plays a conflicted Guantanamo Bay prison guard in Camp X-Ray; Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway, who plays the sister of a comatose musician in Song One; and Saturday Night Live alums Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader reuniting to play distant twins in The Skeleton Twins a drama!

Sundance wouldn’t be Sundance, though, if it were just its rich and famous alums coming back to play. “I was particularly proud watching Catching Fire and sort of remembering Winter’s Bone and remembering Jennifer Lawrence at the festival as a young actress, seeing what she was going to become,” says Cooper. “There’s some great discoveries that I think are going to come out of this festival, too.”

In fact, Cooper and Sundance’s director of programming Trevor Groth think this year’s crop of films — culled from more than 12,000 submissions and including 96 world premieres — is the deepest and most polished slate in history. READ FULL STORY

'Twilight Forever' DVD first look: Kristen Stewart got her rear end 'molded' to help Taylor Lautner? -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Twilight-BTS.jpg

Prepare yourselves, Twihards. Your DVD collection is about to experience a Cullen invasion (the best kind of invasion!).

Tuesday marks the release of Twilight Forever: The Complete Saga on DVD and Blu-ray. Other than a high-definition look at Edward’s sparkling skin, this DVD set also comes with some special behind-the-scenes clips. For instance, did you know that Kristen Stewart got her rear end ‘molded’ in order to create a device that would help Taylor Lautner carry her around for long periods of time (think Jacob and Bella’s walk through the woods in Eclipse)? Well, thanks to an exclusive behind-the-scenes look, we have proof.

Turns out, Lautner carrying Stewart while reciting three pages worth of dialogue wasn’t as easy as it looked, especially after the third or fourth take. “I literally went and got my rear end molded to make this day easier on Taylor,” Stewart says. Check out the video below:
